European Statistics Day 2016

Thursday 20 October is the European Statistics Day. The Czech Statistical Office prepared for you a varied programme. We will release statistical data on children's names, make an exhibition of posters with results from our Mini-Census, and organize an open day in the Central Statistical Library.

The ESD programme will start at 10 a.m. in the premises of the CZSO headquarters in Prague by a press conference on the most favourite children's names of children born in January 2016. The CZSO elaborated also an overview of unusual first names that parents gave to their offspring and the most frequent children's names in selected European countries.

For children we have prepared Pexeso (a game also called Pairs or Memory), an application for smartphones and tablets. It contains interesting statistical data and helps enhance awareness of statistics among the youth.

Adults can try to fill in our statistical quiz. It comprises rather difficult questions related to concrete statistical data from the CZSO website. A person, who will provide correct answers the fastest to the biggest number of questions will become a winner. The quiz will be published on 20 October at 1 p.m. and we will expect your answers until midnight 23 October. The most successful contestant will receive a prize.

The Central Statistical Library in Prague (in the CZSO premises at Skalka), an open day will take place on 20 October. You can see there the most interesting archive publications from the library stock. The open day will be from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Besides that, you are invited to our Mini-Census in Pictures exhibition, which reflects in an interesting way the results of the latest Mini-Census education project, in which 29 628 pupils were involved across the entire Czech Republic. The exhibition will take place until 26 October.

At the same time we remind you of the possibility to register to the already 4th competition for the best statistical poster. This year with the topic: “My country´s history”. The competition is for pupils of basic schools and students of secondary schools. Three teams of each category that will be the best will obtain interesting prizes. Last but not least you can watch two short video-inquiries that we recorded on the occasion of the European Statistics Day with celebrities of statistics:

- What is, in your opinion, the main sense of statistics?

Correspondence sent from the CZSO during September until 20 October gets a special stamp referring to the European Statistics Day.
