Meat production down

11.05.2022
Code: 270149-22

In Q1 2022, the total meat production declined by 1.5%, y-o-y, to 111 669 tonnes, of which the production of beef went down the most (to 17 435 tonnes, 2.3%). The production of pigmeat accounted for 52 710 tonnes (1.0%) and the production of poultrymeat for 41 502 tonnes (1.6%).

“The results of livestock production for Q1 2022 highlight the lower meat production and, particularly in the case of pigs, the already noticeable decline in their numbers as a result of the unsustainable difference between the rate of growth in input prices and prices and the prices at which the farmers sell their production,“ Markéta Fiedlerová, an expert from the Agricultural and Forestry Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office, says.

Meat production a milk collection
In Q1 2022, the production of beef at slaughterhouses fell to 17 435 tonnes (2.3%), y-o-y. In total 56.1 thous. head of cattle (3.2%) were slaughtered, of which 22.5 thous. head were bulls (6.8%), 25.1 thous. head were cows (+0.9%) and 6.5 thous. head were heifers (6.1%). This data reflect lowered number of fattening cattle at the beginning of Q1 2022 together with decreased imports and slightly higher exports of animals intended for slaughter.
The pigmeat production reached 52 710 tonnes (
1.0%). The number of slaughtered pigs declined, y-o-y, to 558.8 thous. head (2.2%). The number of slaughtered fattened pigs went down by 3.3%, while the number of slaughtered sows grew rapidly to 17.1 thous. head (+52.8%). This led to a distinct reduction of their number; as at 1 April 2022, there was an unprecedented number of sows kept in Czechia accounting for 80.8 thous. head, i.e. by 10.7% less than a year earlier.
The poultrymeat production amounted to 41 502 tonnes (
1.6%), which value corresponds to 63 897 tonnes of poultry supplied to slaughterhouses.
In total 770 975 thousand litres of milk (+2.2%) were collected from domestic producers in Q1 2022, of which 670 536 thousand litres (+2.6%) were purchased by dairies.

Agricultural producer prices
Agricultural producer prices of cattle for slaughter went up by 16.2%, y-o-y, of which by 12.9% for bulls for slaughter, by 22.1% for cows for slaughter, and by 17.8% for heifers for slaughter. The average price of bulls for slaughter was 51.58 CZK per kg in live weight or 93.88 CZK per kg in carcass weight.
The prices of pigs for slaughter still persisted at the long-term minimum values; but, due to a low comparison basis, they went up by 1.1%. Agricultural producers sold pigs for on average 25.59 CZK per kg in live weight or 33.26 CZK per kg in carcass weight.
The prices of chicken for slaughter maintained their trend of a slight year-on-year increase (+1.7%). Chicken for slaughter of the first quality class were sold on average for 23.66 CZK per kg in live weight.
Agricultural producer prices of milk grew, y-o-y, by 14.0%. The average price of Q-quality milk surpassed the level of 10 CZK per litre by 0.01 CZK.
