Considerable decline in construction was going on

In February 2010 seasonally adjusted construction output decreased by 0.1 %, m-o-m, and by 23.6 %, in the year-on-year comparison. The planning and building control authorities granted by 0.6 % more building permits, year-on-year. Approximate value of permitted constructions decreased by 24.0 %, year-on-year. The number of started dwellings fell by 33.2 %, y-o-y, and completed dwellings increased by 4.0 %.

In February 2010 construction output decreased by 23.6 % at constant prices, compared with February 2009. Seasonally adjusted construction output was 0.1 % down in February, m-o-m. The slump in construction output owed to unfavourable weather conditions and also to the drop in new construction orders. Building construction output fell by 29.5 % (contribution -22.2 p.p.) and civil engineering output registered a decrease by 5.5 % (contribution -1.4 p.p.).

The average registered number of employees in construction enterprises with 50 and more employees dropped by 7.9 % compared with February 2009. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 4.0 % compared with February 2009 and reached CZK 23 843.

In February 2010 the number of building permits granted was up by 0.6 %, y-o-y, the planning and building control authorities granted 7 335 building permits. The approximate value of constructions accounted for CZK 21.9 billion and compared to corresponding period in 2009 it dropped by 24.0 %.

The number of dwellings started dropped by 33.2 % compared to February 2009 to reach 1 829 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in family houses dropped by 7.5 %, y-o-y, (contribution -3.2 p.p.). The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings dropped by 59.6 % (contribution -13.2 p.p.).

The number of completed dwellings increased by 4.0 % compared to February 2009 and reached 3 227 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings in family houses dropped by 3.2 % (contribution -1.5 p.p.) and in multi-dwelling buildings the number increased by 29.0 % (contribution +10.0 p.p.).

According to the Eurostat news release, WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU 27 dropped by 8.4 % in January 2010 compared with January 2009. Building construction fell by 7.6 % and civil engineering fell by 2.9 %. The data for February 2010 will be released by Eurostat at 11:00 a.m. on 19 April 2010.
