Construction output decreased

In August 2013 the construction output decreased by 8.1%, year-on-year (y-o-y). The planning and building control authorities granted by 14.8% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions plummeted by 63.1%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings was up by 3.0%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings dropped by 23.8%, y-o-y.

In August 2013 the construction output decreased by 8.1%, y-o-y. If working days adjusted the construction output decreased by 6.9%. August 2013 was by one working day shorter than the same month of the previous year. The seasonally adjusted construction output in August 2013 was by 3.5% lower, month-on-month (m-o-m). The production in building construction decreased by 5.3% (contribution -3.6 percentage points (p.p.)), y-o-y, and the production of civil engineering construction dropped by 13.6% (contribution -4.5 p.p.), y-o-y. Compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom, the construction output dropped by 28.6% since the beginning of 2013 till the end of August 2013.

The average registered number of employees 1) in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 8.8%, y-o-y, in August 2013. Their average gross monthly nominal wage decreased by 8.0%, compared year-on-year, and reached CZK 28 174. The decline in the average wage was affected by a high comparison basis of August 2012 when some of the enterprises paid extraordinary annual bonuses to their employees.

In August 2013 the number of building permits granted decreased by 14.8%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 7 713 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 19.6 billion and plummeted by 63.1% compared to the same period of 2012. This substantial drop was in part caused by a high comparison basis of the last year when there were permits for large constructions for energy industry and manufacturing granted.

The number of dwellings started in August 2013 increased by 3.0%, y-o-y, and attained 2 010 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings jumped up by 135.4% and that of dwellings started in family houses dropped by 18.8%.

The number of completed dwellings fell by 23.8%, y-o-y, in August 2013 and was 2 154 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 50.6%. The number of completed dwellings in family houses increased by 4.6%.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU28 decreased by 1.1%, y-o-y, in July 2013. Buildings dropped by 1.0% and civil engineering works fell by 2.3%. According to the preliminary schedule Eurostat shall release the data for August 2013 on 17 October 2013 (at 11:00 a.m.).

1) The registered number of employees indicator does not include: persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises, and cooperating household members, who do not have an employment contract. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have an employment contract, however, in other activity than construction.
