Decline in construction output continued

In August 2010 seasonally adjusted construction output increased by 0.2%, month-on-month, and decreased by 2.1%, in the year-on-year comparison. The planning and building control authorities granted by 2.8% less building permits, y-o-y. Approximate value of permitted constructions increased by 14.8%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings fell by 13.6% and completed dwellings dropped by 14.8%, y-o-y.

In August 2010 construction output decreased by 2.1% at constant prices, compared with August 2009; working days adjusted construction output fell by 3.3%. August 2010 had 1 working day more compared to August 2009. Seasonally adjusted construction output was 0.2% up in August 2010, m-o-m. Building construction output fell by 5.6% (contribution -3.7 percentage point) and the civil engineering output increased by 4.6% (contribution 1.6 p.p.).

The average registered number of employees in construction enterprises with 50+ employees dropped by 0.6% compared with August 2009. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 1.7% compared with August 2009 and reached CZK 26 868.

In August 2010 the number of building permits granted was down by 2.8%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 10 087 building permits, 5 421 permits for new construction (contribution -4.0 p.p., drop by 7.1%) and 4 666 permits for changes in completed constructions (contribution +1.2 p.p., growth by 2.9%).

The approximate value of constructions permitted in August 2010 accounted for CZK 40.0 billion and compared to the corresponding period in 2009 it increased by 14.8%. New constructions registered an increase in the approximate value of permitted constructions to CZK 30.5 billion (contribution +18.4 p.p., growth by 26.6%) mainly due to permits granted for expensive constructions of transport infrastructure, and constructions for power engineering (photovoltaic power plants in particular). Renewals and enhancements should produce constructions worth CZK 9.5 billion (contribution -3.6 p.p., drop by 11.5%).

The number of dwellings started dropped by 13.6% compared to August 2009 to reach 2 794 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in family houses increased by 2.6%, y-o-y (contribution +1.5 p.p.). The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings fell by 55.7% (contribution -15.4 p.p.).

The number of completed dwellings dropped by 14.8% compared to August 2009 and reached 2 202 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings in family houses increased by 6.9% (contribution +3.5 p.p.) and in multi-dwelling buildings the number dropped by 51.4% (contribution -15.9 p.p.).

According to the Eurostat news release, WDA construction output in the EU 27 decreased by 2.3% in July 2010 compared with July 2009. Building construction decreased by 2.3% and civil engineering fell by 1.5%. The data for August 2010 will be released by Eurostat on 19 October 2010 (at 11:00 a.m.).
