Even a higher number of working days has not stopped the decline in construction output

In October 2012 the construction output decreased by 4.3%, year-on-year (y-o-y), in real terms. The planning and building control authorities granted by 2.1% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions decreased by 4.3%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings dropped by 4.7%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings fell by 17.3%, y-o-y.

In October 2012 the construction output decreased by 4.3%, y-o-y, in real terms. The working days adjusted construction output in October 2012 was by 8.0% lower, y-o-y. October 2012 was by three working days longer compared to the same month of the previous year. The seasonally adjusted construction output in October 2012 was by 0.7% lower, month-on-month. The production in building construction decreased by 1.7% (contribution -1.1 percentage point (p.p.)), y-o-y, and the production of civil engineering construction dropped by 9.5% (contribution -3.2 p.p.), y-o-y. The construction output from this year beginning to the end of October of this year dropped by 19.3% compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom.

The average registered number of employees 1) in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 3.9%, y-o-y, in October 2012. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 5.4%, y -o-y, and reached CZK 31 150.

In October 2012 the number of building permits granted dropped by 2.1%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 9 350 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 25.3 billion and fell by 4.3% compared to the same period of 2011.

In October 2012 the number of dwellings started dropped by 4.7%, y-o-y, and attained 2 337 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings fell by 25.4% and in family houses it decreased by 5.3%.

The number of completed dwellings decreased by 17.3%, y-o-y, and was 2 401 dwellings in October 2012. The number of completed dwellings in family houses declined by 11.3% and that in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 34.7%.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU27 decreased by 5.8%, y-o-y, in September 2012. Building construction fell by 6.5% and civil engineering construction dropped by 4.2%. Eurostat shall release the data for October 2012 on 19 December 2012 (at 11:00 a.m.).

1) The registered number of employees indicator does not include: persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises, and cooperating household members, who do not have an employment contract. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have an employment contract, however, in other activity than construction.
