Year-on-year decline of output as well as employment continued

In November 2013 the construction output decreased by 9.3%, year-on-year (y-o-y) in real terms. The planning and building control authorities granted by 13.4% less building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions increased by 5.8%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings jumped up by 32.0%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings was down by 16.5%, y-o-y.

In November 2013 the construction output decreased by 9.3%, y-o-y in real terms. If working days adjusted the construction output dropped by 8.3%. November 2013 was by one working day shorter than the same month of the previous year. The seasonally adjusted construction output in November 2013 was by 5.6% lower, month-on-month (m-o-m). The production in building construction decreased by 10.8% (contribution -6.9 percentage points (p.p.)), y-o-y, and the production of civil engineering construction dropped by 6.7% (contribution -2.4 p.p.), y-o-y. Compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom, the construction output dropped by 25.9% since the beginning of 2013 till the end of November 2013.

The average registered number of employees *) in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 8.1%, y-o-y, in November 2013. Their average gross monthly nominal wage decreased by 6.0%, compared year-on-year, and reached CZK 33 130.

In November 2013 the number of building permits granted decreased by 13.4%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 6 644 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 24.0 billion and increased by 5.8% compared to the same period of 2012.

The number of dwellings started in November 2013 jumped up by 32.0%, y-o-y, and attained 1 913 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings increased almost four times and that of dwellings started in family houses dropped by 11.8%.

The number of completed dwellings decreased by 16.5%, y-o-y, in November 2013 and was 2 120 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings plummeted by 30.3%. The number of completed dwellings in family houses decreased by 9.3%.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU28 decreased by 0.8%, y-o-y, in October 2013. Buildings decreased by 0.7% and civil engineering works fell by 1.7%. According to the preliminary schedule Eurostat shall release the data for November 2013 on 17 January 2014 (at 11:00 a.m.).

*) The registered number of employees indicator does not include: persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises, and cooperating household members, who do not have an employment contract. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have an employment contract, however, in other activity than construction.
