Further decline in construction production

In January 2013 the construction output declined by 9.3%, year-on-year (y-o-y). The planning and building control authorities granted by 4.1% more building permits, y-o-y, and the approximate value of permitted constructions dropped by 31.7%, y-o-y. The number of started dwellings was down by 39.0%, y-o-y, and the number of completed dwellings decreased by 10.4%, y-o-y.

In January 2013 the construction output decreased by 9.3%, y-o-y. The seasonally adjusted construction output in January 2013 was by 4.4% down, month-on-month (m-o-m). The production in building construction decreased by 7.5% (contribution
-5.7 percentage points (p.p.)), y-o-y, and the production of civil engineering construction dropped by 15.3% (contribution -3.6 p.p.), y-o-y. The construction output in January 2013 plummeted by 39.9% compared to the same period of 2008, the year of boom.

The average registered number of employees 1) in construction enterprises with 50+ employees fell by 6.2%, y-o-y, in January 2013. Their average monthly nominal wage increased by 1.6%, y-o-y, and reached CZK 26 673.

In January 2013 the number of building permits granted increased by 4.1%, y-o-y; the planning and building control authorities granted 7 040 building permits. The approximate value of the permitted constructions attained CZK 16.4 billion and dropped by 31.7% compared to the same period of 2012.

The number of dwellings started in January 2013 plummeted by 39.0%, y-o-y, and attained 1 492 dwellings. The number of dwellings started in multi-dwelling buildings plunged by 89.9% and that of dwellings started in family houses, on the contrary, increased by 12.6%.

The number of completed dwellings fell by 10.4%, y-o-y, in January 2013 and was 2 308 dwellings. The number of completed dwellings in multi-dwelling buildings dropped by 19.9%. The number of completed dwellings in family houses decreased by 1.6%.

According to Eurostat the WDA (working days adjusted) construction output in the EU27 decreased by 8.5%, y-o-y, in December 2012. Building construction fell by 8.3% and civil engineering construction dropped by 11.2%. Eurostat shall release the data for January 2013 on 19 March 2013 (at 11:00 a.m.).


Remark:

Beginning at the News Release for January 2013 the base of short-term statistics has changed. Besides a change to the reference period of base indexes, which are newly measured to the average of 2010 instead of that of 2005, the weighting scheme for 2010 is applied as well. In accord with the Eurostat methodology the new weights shall be used for a retroactive conversion back to 2009 which shall result in a revision of base indexes as well as year-on-year ones. 1) The registered number of employees indicator does not include: persons working under various contracts for work, working owners of enterprises, and cooperating household members, who do not have an employment contract. Data on the registered number of employees in construction also exclude agency workers, who have an employment contract, however, in other activity than construction.
