Sales in services dropped by 0.6% in 2012

In Q4 2012, seasonally adjusted sales in services decreased, quarter-on-quarter, at constant prices by 1.6%. Working day adjusted sales decreased by 2.5%, year-on-year, non-adjusted by 2.3%. The overall development was influenced the most by decline of sales in professional, scientific and technical activities.
For the entire year 2012, sales in services dropped by 0.6%, y-o-y.

In Q4 2012, seasonally adjusted sales in services 1 ) decreased, quarter-on-quarter, at constant prices by 1.6%. After working day adjustment they decreased by 2.5%, year-on-year (in Q4 2012 there was one working day more). Non-adjusted sales dropped by 2.3%.

Year-on-year development of not seasonally adjusted sales in services broken down by CZ-NACE division:

- sales in transportation and storage decreased by 1.3%, especially due to a decrease in land transport and transport via pipelines (-2.6%). A two-digit decrease was recorded in air transport (-11.9%). Lower sales were reported also by postal and courier activities (-2.5%). A growth was recorded in warehousing and support activities for transportation (+2.1%). Sales in water transport continued to grow (this time by 4.4%);

- sales in accommodation and food service activities decreased (-2.9%). The decrease was influenced mainly by development in food and beverage service activities, in which sales dropped by 6.6%. On the contrary, in accommodation sales continued to grow (the growth started in the Q3 2010), this time it was +3.7%;

- the decrease of sales in information and communication by 0.8% was contributed to by all divisions with the exception of computer programming, consultancy and related activities (growth by 3.3%), which include e.g. computer programming activities, computer consultancy activities, and computer facilities management activities; another exception was programming and broadcasting activities (growth by 16.3%). The deepest decrease of sales was in music and motion picture activities, namely by 8.0%. Drop of sales occurred also in telecommunications (-4.8%), information service activities (-4.1%), and publishing activities (-1.3%);

- sales in real estate activities dropped by 6.4%. Buying and selling of own real estate and renting and operating of own or leased real estate decreased by 9.5%, while real estate activities on a fee or contract basis recorded a slight growth for the first time after 6 quarters (+0.7%);

- sales in professional, scientific and technical activities 2 ) decreased by 3.9%. Drop was recorded in all divisions except for advertising and market research (increase by 0.6%). The deepest sales fall was in activities of head offices; management consultancy activities (-8.7%) and in other professional, scientific and technical activities (-8.4%); architectural and engineering activities, which are important for their volume, decreased by 4.7%;

- sales in administrative and support service activities 3 ) decreased by 1.7%. The following contributed the most to the decrease: rental and leasing activities (-4.7%), travel agency, tour operator and other reservation service and related activities (-3.5%), and office administrative, office support and other business support activities (-2.8%). An increase of sales was recorded by employment activities (+3.8%); services to buildings and landscape activities stagnated.

Development in 2012

In 2012, sales in services 1) decreased by 0.6%, y-o-y. The same as in the fourth quarter, drop of sales in professional, scientific and technical activities had the biggest influence on the development of services. Growth was reported only by transportation and storage and by administrative and support service activities.

Year-on-year development of not seasonally adjusted sales in services broken down by CZ-NACE division:

- growth of sales in transportation and storage by 0.9% was influenced mainly by warehousing and support activities for transportation, which reported growth in all quarters (+5.3% in total). An increase was recorded also in water transport (+5.5%). Sales of land transport and transport via pipelines were decreasing since the second quarter; they dropped by 0.8% in total. A decrease of sales was recorded also at air transport (-7.4%) and at postal and courier activities (-3.8%);

- sales for the entire section of accommodation and food service activities dropped by 2.2%, however, the development within the section was completely different. While in accommodation the development was favourable (sales grew except for June during the entire year 2012 and increased in total by 4.7%), in food and beverage service activities sales dropped by 6.2%. Long-term drop of food and beverage service activities started already in 2008 and since that time it persisted until the end of 2012 only with slight fluctuations (in January and April 2011);

- sales in information and communication dropped by 0.4%. The drop was influenced mainly by telecommunications (decrease by 3.1%) and information service activities (drop by 6.6%), which include, for example, activities related to web portals, data processing and hosting. Also publishing activities decreased (-2.9%) as well as so-called music and motion picture activities (-6.8%). During all quarters, sales growth was reported by: computer programming, consultancy and related activities (+4.1% in total) and programming and broadcasting activities, which reached a two-digit growth in all quarters of 2012;

- in real estate activities the long-term fall continued; the sales dropped by 4.7% for the entire year. Sales for buying and selling of own real estate and renting and operation of own or leased real estate started to gradually drop after a slight increase in the first quarter and in the annual sum they dropped by 4.5%. Real estate activities on a fee or contract basis recorded a decrease by 5.1%;

- sales in professional, scientific and technical activities 2) dropped by 3.0%, a decrease was recorded in all divisions. The biggest influence on the development came from the drop of legal and accounting activities (-4.3%) and other professional, scientific and technical activities (-6.7%). The smallest decrease was recorded by architectural and engineering activities (-1.4%) and advertising and market research (-1.5%); in both the divisions it was a smaller decrease than for the year 2011;

- sales of administrative and support service activities 3) increased by 2.1%. Sales increased in the following divisions: travel agency, tour operator and other reservation service and related activities (+2.2%), office administrative, office support and other business support activities (+1.9%) and services to buildings and landscape activities (+1.4%). An increase in all quarters was recorded by employment activities (annual growth by 12.3%), while a decrease in all quarters was reported by security and investigation activities (annual drop by 2.7%). Sales dropped also in rental and leasing activities (-2.0%).

Attention:
Starting with the News Release for the first quarter of 2013, the base for short-term statistics will change. Besides the change in the base period at fixed-base indices (that will be newly compared to the average of 2010 instead of the average of 2005) also the weighting scheme of the year 2010 will be used. In accordance with the methodology of Eurostat, a back-calculation to the year 2009 will be made on the new weights, which will entail a revision of base and y-o-y indices. Historical data before 2009 will be connected via conversion bridges and the y-o-y indices will thus remain unchanged.
