Industrial production increased by 6.4% in 2021

In December, industrial production decreased in real terms by 2.1%, year-on-year (y-o-y). In the month-on-month (m-o-m) comparison, it was by 2.9% lower. The value of new orders increased by 5.3%, y-o-y.


“In 2021, industrial output increased by 6.4% after having decreased by over 7% before. Compared to the previous year, the production volume increased in an overall majority of economic activities of industry in a virtually even manner. However, due to difficulties in production of motor vehicles, the pre-covid level has not been attained,” Radek Matějka, Director of the Agricultural and Forestry, Industrial, Construction, and Energy Statistics Department, says.  

“Industry ended up in a decrease in 2021 – both in December and the whole last quarter. A key contribution to that result came from car production and related fields, in which enterprises continued to struggle with issues in supply chains and increasing prices of materials and energies. A higher comparison basis also played its role,” Veronika Doležalová, Head of Industrial Statistics Unit, adds.

Industrial production1 in December 2021 was in real terms by 2.9% lower, m-o-m. In the year-on-year comparison, it decreased by 2.1%. The following economic activities contributed the most to the year-on-year change of industrial production: manufacture of motor vehicles, trailers and semi-trailers (a contribution of −2.8 percentage points (p. p.), a decrease by 15.8%), manufacture of rubber and plastic products (a contribution of −0.4 p. p., a decrease by 7.4%), and manufacture of fabricated metal products (a contribution of −0.3 p. p., a decrease by 3.9%). Industrial production increased the most in electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning supply (a contribution of +0.6 p. p., an increase by 4.8%), manufacture of other transport equipment (a contribution of +0.4 p. p., an increase by 15.1%), and manufacture of other non-metallic mineral products (a contribution of +0.3 p. p., an increase by 11.8%).

Sales from industrial activity at current prices1 increased by 6.3%, y-o-y, in December 2021. Direct export sales of industrial enterprises increased at current prices by 2.5%. Domestic sales, which also include indirect export via non-industrial enterprises, increased at current prices by 11.0%. 

The value of new orders1 in surveyed industrial CZ-NACE activities increased by 5.3%, y-o-y, in December 2021. Non-domestic new orders increased by 4.7%, whereas domestic new orders increased by 6.5%. The year-on-year increase of new orders in total was contributed to by the following CZ-NACE divisions: manufacture of chemicals and chemical products (a contribution of +2.8 p. p., an increase by 62.6%), manufacture of fabricated metal products (a contribution of +1.13 p. p., an increase by 9.6%), and manufacture of electrical equipment (a contribution of +1.11 p. p., an increase by 10.9%). New orders decreased in manufacture of other transport equipment (a contribution of −3.1 p. p., a decrease by 8.5%) and in manufacture of basic pharmaceutical products and pharmaceutical preparations (a contribution of −0.2 p. p., a decrease by 16.1%).

The average registered number of employees2 in industry in December 2021 increased by 0.1%, y-o-y. Their average gross monthly nominal wage increased by 2.3%, y-o-y, in December 2021.

According to data released by Eurostat, industrial production in the EU27 in November 2021 was on the same level as in November 2020. Production of Lithuanian and Polish industry increased the most, year-on-year; Czech industry increased by 1.6%. On the other hand, production of Irish and Maltese industry decreased the most; German industry decreased by 2.5%. According to a preliminary release calendar, Eurostat will release data for December 2021 on 16 February 2022.


Industry in the fourth quarter of 2021

Seasonally adjusted industrial production1 in the Q4 2021 increased by 0.2% compared to the Q3 2021. In the year-on-year comparison, it decreased by 1.8%.

Sales from industrial activity at current prices1 were higher by 3.5%, y-o-y, in the Q4 2021. Direct export sales of industrial enterprises decreased at current prices by 0.3%. Domestic sales, which also include indirect export via non-industrial enterprises, increased at current prices by 8.8%.

The value of new orders1 in selected industrial CZ-NACE activities increased by 4.0%, y-o-y, in the Q4 2021. Non-domestic new orders increased by 3.3%, while domestic new orders increased by 5.6%.

The average registered number of employees2 in industry was in the Q4 2021 on the same level as in the Q4 2020. Their average gross monthly nominal wage increased by 3.6%, y-o-y, in the Q4 2021.


Industry in 2021

In 2021, industrial production1 increased by 6.4%, y-o-y.

Sales from industrial activity at current prices1 were higher by 10.5%, y-o-y, in 2021. Direct export sales of industrial enterprises increased at current prices by 10.6%. Domestic sales, which also include indirect export via non-industrial enterprises, increased at current prices by 10.2%.

The value of new orders1 in selected industrial CZ-NACE activities increased by 14.9%, y-o-y, in 2021. Non-domestic new orders increased by 16.2%, while domestic new orders increased by 12.2%.

The average registered number of employees2 in industry decreased by 1.2%, y-o-y, in 2021. Their average gross monthly nominal wage increased by 5.4%, y-o-y, in 2021.

1 The year-on-year development of all indicators has been adjusted for working days unless otherwise stated. Month-on-month or quarter-on-quarter rates are also seasonally adjusted. Contributions to an increase or to a decrease are calculated from data adjusted for working days. December 2021 had one working day more compared to December 2020. 
2 Indicators related to employment in industry apply to the whole population of enterprises the principal (prevailing) activity of which is industry. The indicator of the registered number of employees doesn’t include persons working under an agreement on work performance and an agreement on work activity, working owners of enterprises, and contributing family workers (cooperating household members) who do not have contracts of employment. The piece of data on the registered number of employees in industry also excludes agency workers who have contracts of employment within economic activities of services (CZ-NACE 78.2).
