The number of inhabitants of the CR decreased

The population of the Czech Republic decreased by 3.3 thousand to 10 512.8 thousand during the first quarter of 2013. The decrease resulted only from a negative balance of the natural movement. The number of live births was by 1.0 thousand lower that in the same period in 2012, the number of deaths was by 0.2 thousand lower, the number of marriages and the number of abortions also decreased (by 0.7 thousand in both cases); only number of divorces increased (by 0.4 thousand).

From January to March 2013 a total of 25.4 thousand children were live born in the Czech Republic, which was by 1.0 thousand less than a year before. There was less first order children (by 433, i.e. 3.5%) so as second order (by 531, i.e. 5.2%) and third or higher order (by 11, i.e. 0.3%) children in the comparison with the same period of the previous year. In relation to the figure of first quarter of 2012 the share of children born to unmarried woman further slightly increased. A total of 11.3 thousand children (44.7%) were born outside marriage in the 1st quarter of 2013. From the first order children, more than a half (55.7%) of children were born to unmarried woman. In the first quarter of 2013 the most of children were born to woman aged
29–32, from the first children to woman at the age of 27–30.

There were 28.7 thousand of deaths from January to March 2013, which was 0.2 thousand less than in the same period of 2012. The average age of deceased person was 75.4 years (71.9 for men, 78.8 for women). The infant mortality rate was 2.4 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in the 1st quarter of 2013 (3.0 in the 1st quarter of 2012).

A total of 3.0 thousand of marriages were entered into, which was by 0.7 thousand down on a year before. It was the 1st marriage for 62.4% of grooms and 60.0% of brides. In less than half cases (48.7%) it was the 1st marriage for both engaged.

In first three months of 2013 a total of 6.5 thousand marriages were divorced, which was 0.4 thousand more than in the same period of previous year. A total of 55.3% of divorcees had minor children, which were 5.5 thousand. The highest numbers of divorce were at 3–5 years after marriage. A woman was plaintiff by 65% of divorces.

In the first quarter of 2013, a total of 9.5 thousand abortions were registered, by 0.7 thousand fewer than in the comparable period of the previous year, as a consequence of the reduction in the number of induced abortions (by 456 lower number) and lower number of spontaneous abortions (by 214). A total of 3.0 thousand single women and 2.0 thousand married women underwent the induced abortion.

The net international migration was equal minus 4 people – the number of emigrants was 9 998 people and number of immigrants was 9 994 people. The highest net migration was reached with the citizens of Slovakia (1 213 people) and Germany (334 people), followed by United States (290 people) and Romania (213 people). The considerable decrease was registered in the number of citizens of Ukraine (by 2 201 persons), Czech Republic (by 505 persons) and the number of Vietnamese citizens (by 427 persons).

All data refer to the resident population of the Czech Republic, irrespective of citizenship. Since 2001, the figures include (in accordance with the Population and Housing Census 2001) foreigners with long-term stay (i.e., the stay based on visa over 90 days, as stipulated by Act No. 326/1999 Coll.) and foreigners with granted asylum status (in compliance with Act No. 325/1999 Coll.). Since 1st May 2004, in accordance with amendment No. 326/1999 Coll., the figures include also citizens of the European Union with temporary stay on the territory of the Czech Republic, and citizens of third-countries with long-term stay. The data also contain information on events (marriages, births and deaths) of permanent residents of the Czech Republic that occurred abroad.
Since July 2012 the source for migration data of foreigners is Alien Information System administrated by Directorate of Alien Police. It the previous periods source for migration data of foreigners was Information System of Inhabitants Record administered by the Ministry of Interior.
