Further decline in births

The population of the Czech Republic increased by 2.1 thousand to 10 507.6 thousand during the first quarter of 2012. The increase resulted from a positive balance of international migration, by the natural movement the population was reduced by 1.9 thousand. The number of live births was by 0.7 thousand lower that in the same period in 2011. The number of deaths was by 0.3 thousand lower, the number of marriages (by 0.1 thousand), divorces (by 0.7 thousand) and abortions (by 0.4 thousand) also decreased.

From January to March 2012 a total of 26.1 thousand children were born alive in the Czech Republic, which was by 0.7 thousand less than a year before. There was less first order children (by 417, i.e. 3.3%) so as second order (by 235, i.e. 2.3%) and third or higher order (by 76, i.e. 2.0%) children in the comparison with the same period of the previous year. In the comparison with the figure of first quarter of 2011 the share of children born to unmarried woman further slightly increased. A total of 11.2 thousand children (43.1 percent) were born outside marriage in the 1 st quarter of 2012. From the first order children, more than a half (54.0%) of children were born outside marriage. In the first quarter of 2012 the most of children were born to woman aged 30-32, from the first children to woman at the age of 27-29.

There were 28.1 thousand of deaths from January to March 2012, which was 0.3 thousand less than in the same period of 2011. The average age of deceased person was 75.1 years (71.4 for men, 78.6 for women). The most deaths, more than half, were caused by diseases of the circulatory system (14.3 thousand), a total of 6.6 thousand of deceased died due to neoplasms and a total of 1.7 thousand due to diseases of the respiratory system. The infant mortality rate was 2.7 infant deaths per 1,000 live births in the 1 st quarter of 2012 (2.8 in the 1 st quarter of 2011).

In the 1 st quarter of 2012 the decline in nuptiality further continued. A total of 3.4 thousand of marriages were entered into, which was by 130 down on a year before. Less than half (47.6% i.e. by one percentage point lower than previous year), it was the 1 st marriage for both engaged. The average age of groom was 38.1 year (32.2 for the first marriage) and the average age of bride was 34.7 years (29.0 for the first marriage).

In first three months of 2012 a total of 6.1 thousand marriages were divorced, which was 0.7 thousand less than in the same period of 2011. Besides a possible decrease of divorce intensity it was rather a consequence of an irregular termination of divorces. A total of 57.6% of divorcees had minor children, which were 5.3 thousand.

In the first quarter of 2012, a total of 10.0 thousand abortions were registered, by 0.4 thousand fewer than in the comparable period of the previous year, as a consequence of the reduction in the number of induced abortions (by 270 lower number). The number of spontaneous abortions was lower as well (by 145).

According to the data from the Information System of Inhabitants Records of the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic the international migration added up a total of 4 066 persons during the first quarter of 2012, which was by 1.6 thousand less than in the same period in 2011. The number of immigrants decreased by 2.1 thousand to 5.2 thousand and the number of emigrants by 0.5 thousand to 1.1 thousand. The highest net migration was reached with the citizens of Slovakia (784 people) and Russia (594 people), followed by United States (411 people) and Ukraine (337 people). The decrease was registered only in the number of citizens of Czech Republic (by 368 persons).

All data refer to the resident population of the Czech Republic, irrespective of citizenship. Since 2001, the figures include (in accordance with the Population and Housing Census 2001) foreigners with long-term stay (i.e., the stay based on visa over 90 days, as stipulated by Act No. 326/1999 Coll.) and foreigners with granted asylum status (in compliance with Act No. 325/1999 Coll.). Since 1st May 2004, in accordance with amendment No. 326/1999 Coll., the figures include citizens of the European Union with temporary stay on the territory of the Czech Republic, and citizens of other countries with long-term stay. The data also contain information on events (marriages, births and deaths) of permanent residents of the Czech Republic that occurred abroad.
