According to the preliminary statistical balance the total population of the Czech Republic on 30 September was 10 526 685. During the first three quarters the population increased by 19.9 thousand persons against the increase by 36.2 thousand during the same period of 2009. The net migration has continued in decreasing trend, when it fell from 25.9 to 9.6 thousand interannual. More than half of population increase was formed by natural increase; the number of live births was by 10.3 thousand higher than the number of deaths.

From January to September 2010 a total of 88.7 thousand children were born alive, by 1.5 thousand down on a same period of previous year. The whole drop related to the first order children (decreased by 1.7 thousand); the number of children in the second and third order was slightly higher. The increasing trend of natality stopped in last year and it could not be expected its recovery in near future. Woman from numerous generations of 1970s already have two or three children and woman born during the period of 1980s´decreasing natality enter the age of high fertility. The average number of children born to one woman (total fertility rate) decreased only slightly, from 1.49 in 1 st-3 rd quarter of 2009 to 1.48. Most often, children were born to woman aged 29-32 year; these women delivered one-third of all children. The average age of mothers was slightly higher again. The share of live births born outside marriage is further increasing this year. A total of 40.1 % (35.6 thousand) of children was born to unmarried woman, whereas it was 38.6 % in the period of 1 st-3 rd quarter of 2009.

During the first nine months of 2010 there were 78.4 thousand of deaths, which was by 1.6 thousand less than in the same period of last year. The drop should be more slightly after figuring in supplements, and mortality remain at the level generally same as in the year of 2009. The structure of deceased by causes of death also remains stable. The most deaths, more than half, were caused by diseases of the circulatory system (39.3 thousand), a total of 20.8 thousand of deceased died due to neoplasms, a total of 4.5 thousand due to diseases of the respiratory system and a total of 4.4 thousand of deaths resulted from external causes (transport accidents, falls, suicides, violent deaths , poisonings etc.). All these causes composed a total of 88 % of deaths in 1 st-3 rd quarter of 2010. The number of infant deaths so as the infant mortality rate was again at lowers level this year. Per 10 thousand live births, a total of 25 infants died before reaching the age of 1. Infant mortality rate at level below 3 per mille fits the Czech Republic into the most developed countries.

This year, in the period of 1 st-3 rd quarter only 39.0 thousand marriages were entered into, which was by 2.6 thousand down on a same period year before. It is the lowest number historically and neither “attractive” date 10/10/10 probably recoup the drop. The nuptiality rate is long-term decreasing and on top of that, more numerous generations of 1970s have crossed the age of high nuptiality. The most weddings were traditionally celebrated in June, July and August (7.2-7.8 thousand a month), the fewest in January (0.9 thousand).

In following period a total of 22.3 thousand of marriages get divorced, almost the same number as in period January-September in 2009. A woman was a plaintiff by two-thirds; a total of 57.6 % of divorcees had minor children. During nine months of 2010 a total of 19.3 thousand children went through the loss of one parent by divorce.

From the 1 st to 3 rd quarter of 2010 there were 29.4 thousand abortions registered. The decrease in the number of induced abortions (by 755 to 18.0 thousand) shared total decrease (by 1.4 thousand) by more than half. After the long period of increasing number of spontaneous abortions, the figure decreased from 11.0 thousand in January-September 2009 to 10.4 thousand as a consequence of lower number of pregnancies.

According to the data from the Central Population Register Record of the Ministry of the Interior the net migration was 9.6 thousand in the first nine months in 2010, although it was 25.9 thousand in the same period of last year. The significant decrease resulted from the lower number of immigrants (by a third) and higher number of emigrants (by 64 %). According to the Alien Information System a total of 425,568 foreigners lived in the Czech Republic as of 30 September 2010, and composed 4.0 % of total population.
