Number of divorces further declined

The population of the Czech Republic increased by 6.8 thousand to 10 512.2 thousand during the first half-year of 2012. The increase resulted from a positive balance of international migration, by the natural movement the population was reduced by 1.3 thousand. The number of live births was by 1.2 thousand lower that in the same period in 2011. The number of deaths was by 0.6 thousand higher. The number of marriages increased by 0.1 thousand that in the firth half-year of 2011. The number of divorces sharply declined (by 1.5 thousand) and abortions (by 0.5 thousand) decreased too.

From January to June 2012 a total of 53.3 thousand children were born alive in the Czech Republic, which was by 1.2 thousand less than a year before. There were less especially second order children (by 584) so as third and higher order (by 329) and first order too (by 309) in the comparison with the same period of the previous year. The decrease was most markedly in the third and high order (by 4.2%). In the comparison with the figure of first half-year of 2011 the share of children born to unmarried woman further slightly increased. A total of 22.9 thousand children (43.0 percent) were born outside marriage in the first half-year of 2012. From the first order children, more than a half (54.3%) of children were born outside marriage. In the first half-year of 2012 the most of children were born to woman aged 29-32, from the first children to woman at the age of 27-30. Fertility rate remained at the same level (1.43 child per woman) as the same period of the year 2011.

There were 54.6 thousand of deaths at the first half-year 2012, which was 0.6 thousand more than in the same period of 2011. The average age of deceased person was 74.9 years (71.2 for men, 78.7 for women). The half of deaths was caused by diseases of the circulatory system (27.3 thousand), a total of 13.5 thousand of deceased died due to neoplasms and a total of 3.1 thousand (i.e. 6 %) due to diseases of the respiratory system. Children died before reaching one year of age was 149 and infant mortality rate was at 28 infant deaths per 10,000 live births.

In the first half-year of 2012 the decline of numbers of marriages was stopped. A total of 17.8 thousand of marriages were entered into, which was by 113 up on a year before. In three-quarters, it was the 1 st marriage for groom and bride. Less than two thirds (64.5% i.e. by 1.5 percentage point higher than previous year), it was the 1 st marriage for both engaged.

In first six months of 2012 a total of 12.9 thousand marriages were divorced, which was 1.5 thousand less than in the same period of 2011. The trend from previous year was continuing. The share of divorcees with minor children year-to-year increased nearly by 1.9 percentage point to 57.9%. The highest divorce rates were at 3-5 years after wedding.
In the first half-year of 2012, a total of 19.3 thousand abortions were registered, by 0.5 thousand fewer than in the comparable period of the previous year, as a consequence of the reduction in the number of interruptions (by 484 lower number).

According to the data from the Information System of Inhabitants Records of the Ministry of the Interior of the Czech Republic the international migration added up a total of 8.0 thousand persons during the first quarter of 2012, which was by 1.4 thousand less than in the same period in 2011. The number of immigrants decreased by 2.4 thousand to 10.3 thousand and the number of emigrants by 1.0 thousand to 2.3 thousand. The highest net migration was reached with the citizens of Slovakia (1 690 people) and Russia (870 people), followed by Ukraine (685 people) and United States (634 people). The decrease was registered only in the number of citizens of Czech Republic (by 639 persons) and Denmark (by 8 persons).

All data refer to the resident population of the Czech Republic, irrespective of citizenship. Since 2001, the figures include (in accordance with the Population and Housing Census 2001) foreigners with long-term stay (i.e., the stay based on visa over 90 days, as stipulated by Act No. 326/1999 Coll.) and foreigners with granted asylum status (in compliance with Act No. 325/1999 Coll.). Since 1st May 2004, in accordance with amendment No. 326/1999 Coll., the figures include citizens of the European Union with temporary stay on the territory of the Czech Republic, and citizens of other countries with long-term stay. The data also contain information on events (marriages, births and deaths) of permanent residents of the Czech Republic that occurred abroad.
