Harvest forecast - July 2015
Good harvests of cereals confirmed; poppy seed harvest to be higher than last year
Pursuant to the second estimates of this year harvest as at 15 July 2015 it is supposed that the production of basic cereals is to reach an amount of 7 592 thous. tonnes of grain and the production of rape is to be 1 208 thous. tonnes. The production of basic cereals will be down by 343 thous. tonnes (- 4.3%) and the production of rape is expected to be lower by 329 thous. tonnes (- 21.4%), compared to the above average harvest of the last year. Poppy seed production shall be 25 thous. tonnes, which is by 2.3% more than the last year.
The estimated production of basic cereals (excluding grain maize) in an amount of 7 592 thous. tonnes of grain is by mere 4.3% lower than the last year above-average production. The year-on-year decrease in the production by 343 thous. tonnes has been entirely caused by a decline in the per hectare yield to 5.83 t/ha (- 4.3%) while areas under basic cereals at 1 303 thous. hectares remained at the same value as in the last year. This year estimated production of basic cereals is higher than the last five-year average as well as the ten-year one (+ 12.4% and + 12.8%, respectively).
A decrease in the per hectare yield, compared to the last year record ones, is expected in all types of basic cereals. The harvest of spring wheat and spring barley will be by 66 thous. tonnes higher than the last year productions due to expanded areas under these crops. The production of other basic cereals will be lower, in total by 409 thous. tonnes, compared to that of the last year.
According to the July estimate the production of winter wheat will be 4 920 thous. tonnes (− 5.8%) at the per hectare yield 6.32 t/ha (− 4.4%), that of spring barley will be 1 434 thous. tonnes (+ 4.2%) at the per hectare yield 5.49 t/ha (− 1.3%), that of winter barley will be 560 thous. tonnes (− 5.2%) at the per hectare yield 5.36 t/ha (− 6.6%), that of spring wheat will be 228 thous. tonnes (+ 3,8 %) at the per hectare yield 4.42 t/ha (− 8.9%), triticale 197 thous. tonnes (− 19.2%) at the per hectare yield 4.59 t/ha (− 8.7%), that of oat will be 149 thous. tonnes (− 2.3%) at the per hectare yield 3.51 t/ha (− 2.5%), and that of rye will be 104 thous. tonnes (− 19.6%) at the per hectare yield 4.72 t/ha (− 8.0%).
The rape production is estimated to be 1 208 thous. tonnes, which is by more than one fifth lower than the last year record one (− 329 thous. tonnes, − 21.4%). The decline in the rape production has been contributed by an assumed lower per hectare yield of 3.30 t/ha (– 16.5%, y-o-y) and a reduction of its sowing area to 366 thous. hectares (− 5.9%). Yet the rape production estimate is by 9.5% higher than the ten-year average (the per hectare yield + 6.5%, sowing area + 2.8%). Compared to the five-year average, however, the estimated production is by 2.2.% lower due to a reduction in the sowing area (the per hectare yield + 4.2%, sowing area + 6.2%).
This year harvest of poppy seed is assumed to be 25 thous. tonnes which is by + 2.3% higher than the last year one. Areas under this traditional crop have been expanding for the third year and this year area under this crop of 33 thous. hectares is by one fifth larger year-on-year (+ 20.8%). The estimated per hectare yield of 0.77 t/ha is by 15.4% lower, year-on-year yet it exceeds the five–year average by 11.9%.
More detailed information on estimated per hectare yields and production of peas, selected varieties of fruit and vegetables crops in the Czech Republic, as a whole and broken by region, are given in the following publication ‘Harvest Forecast – Operative Report as at 15 July 2015’.
