Harvest forecast - July 2010

Estimated production of cereals is by 200 thousand tonnes less

11.08.2010
Code: r-2102-10

Based on the second estimate of yields performed as a 15 July 2010 the Czech Statistical Office supposes that the harvest of basic cereals reach the amount of 6 381 thous. tonnes of grain. In comparison with the June's estimate it means a decrease by 200 thous. tonnes (-3.0%). Harvest forecasts for rape dropped, compared to June, by 36 thous. tonnes (-3.2%) to 1 107 thous. tonnes. Unsteady weather brings about delayed harvest and negatively influences both quantity and quality of expected yields.

The July's estimated harvest of basic cereals in amount of 6 381 thous. tonnes is by 547 thous. tonnes (-7.9%) less, compared to 2009. The sown area of basic cereals diminished, compared with 2009, by 5.4%, expected yields in amount of 4.72 t/ha are by 2.7% less than in 2009.

Production of winter wheat is expected in amount of 4 062 thous. tonnes, i.e. by 4.0% less. The drop is expected also of spring barley, whose yields in amount of 1 143 thous. tonnes are down by 15.6% compared with 2009. Yields per hectare of winter wheat are estimated for 5.17 tonnes (5.33 tonnes in 2009), of spring barley for 4.10 tonnes (4.23 tonnes in 2009). The highest year-on-year drop of yields is signalized for winter barley (-6.6%). By contrast, spring wheat is the only cereal showing higher yields than in 2009 (+17.9%).

The expected decrease of total yields in winter wheat is made from 25.3% by limitation of sown areas and from 74.7% by changes in yields per hectare. Limitation of sown areas of spring barley resulted in the drop of total yields by 13.0%, changes in yields per hectare resulted in reduction of the production by 3.1%.

Production of rape, with supposed yields of 3.00 t/ha (3.18 t/ha in 2009), is expected in amount of 1 107 thous. tonnes, i.e. by 1.9% less than in 2009. The drop, caused by lower yields per hectare (-5.7%), was partially offset by enlargement of sown areas by 14 thous. ha (+3.9%).

Estimated production of poppy in amount of 31 thous. tonnes compared to harvests in 2009 (33 thous. tonnes) is influenced both by limitation of sown areas by 4.7 % and by lower yields of 0.60 t/ha (-1.6%).

More detailed information – also by region division – focused on estimates of yields per hectare and production of early potatoes, peas, selected kinds of fruit and vegetables is stated in the related publication Harvest forecast – operational report for July.
