Sales in retail trade increased by 4.4% in 2021

In December, sales adjusted for calendar effects increased by 1.5% in real terms (at constant prices), year‑on‑year (y-o-y). Non-adjusted sales increased by 3.3%, y-o-y. Seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade decreased by 1.0%, month-on-month (m-o-m).
For the whole year 2021, non-adjusted sales in retail trade increased by 4.4%. 

Seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles1) decreased in real terms (at constant prices) by 1.0%, m-o-m, in December. Sales for sale of automotive fuel decreased by 2.4%, sales for sale of non-food goods by 1.2%, and sales for sale of food decreased by 0.4%.

Sales in retail trade adjusted for calendar effects increased by 1.5%, y-o-y. Sales for sale of automotive fuel increased by 4.7% and for sale of non-food goods by 2.1%, whereas sales for sale of food decreased by 0.2%. December 2021 had one working day more compared to December 2020.

Non-adjusted sales in retail trade increased by 3.3%, y-o-y. Sales for sale of automotive fuel increased by 6.0%, sales for sale of non-food goods by 3.9%, and sales for sale of food increased by 1.6%.

The biggest share in the total increment of sales in December belonged to online shops2) (growth of sales by 8.6%). In specialised stores with non-food goods, sales increased in dispensing chemist and retail sale of medical and orthopaedic goods in specialised stores (by 11.6%), retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (by 6.7%), and retail sale of cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores (by 4.4%). On the other hand, lower sales were received by retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (by 2.1%), retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores (by 2.7%), and retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (by 6.8%). Sales for food were increasing in both: retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (by 8.7%) and in retail sale in non‑specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating (by 1.3%).

The price deflator in retail trade, except for motor vehicles and motorcycles related to the corresponding period of the previous year (VAT excluded) was 107.8%. It was mainly influenced by higher prices of automotive fuel, clothing, footwear and leather goods, other household equipment, cultural and recreation goods, information and communication equipment, food, dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, and cosmetic and toilet articles.

Seasonally adjusted sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles3) decreased in real terms (at constant prices) by 3.0%, m-o-m, and sales adjusted for calendar effects decreased by 5.1%, y-o-y. Non-adjusted sales decreased by 1.7%, y-o-y; sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) decreased by 5.5%, y‑o-y, whereas sales for repair of motor vehicles increased by 10.9%, y‑o‑y.

Development in the fourth quarter of 2021
For the whole Q4 2021,
sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles1) adjusted for calendar effects increased in real terms (at constant prices) by 6.6%, y-o-y. Non-adjusted sales increased by 7.2% (there was one working day more in the Q4 2021 compared to the corresponding period of the previous year). Non‑adjusted sales for sale of non-food goods increased by 11.5%, y-o-y, and sales for sale of automotive fuel by 10.3%, y-o-y, whereas sales for sale of food decreased by 0.2%, y-o-y. In the automotive segment3), sales adjusted for calendar effects decreased in real terms (at constant prices) by 4.9%, y-o-y. Non-adjusted sales decreased by 3.8%, y-o-y. Non‑adjusted sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) decreased by 6.8%, y-o-y, whereas sales for repair of motor vehicles increased by 8.4%, y-o-y.

Development in 2021
For the whole year 2021
, sales in retail trade, except of motor vehicles1) adjusted for calendar effects increased in real terms (at constant prices) by 4.5%, y-o-y; non-adjusted sales increased by 4.4%. Non-adjusted sales for sale of non-food goods increased by 8.2%, sales for sale of automotive fuel increased by 3.4%, whereas sales for sale of food decreased by 0.4%. The highest growth of sales was reported for sales in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet by 16.3%. Compared to 2020, higher sales were reported by all assortment types of non‑food goods. Sales increased in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores by 6.9%, in retail sale of cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores by 6.5%, in retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores by 4.7%, in retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores by 4.6%, in retail sale of dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods in specialised stores by 4.4%, and in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores by 3.2%. Growth of sales was also reported by retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores by 0.5%. On the other hand, non‑specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating reported a decrease of sales by 0.5%. The average price deflator for the year 2021 was 103.5%.  

In the automotive segment3), sales adjusted for calendar effects increased in real terms (at constant prices) by 8.3%, y‑o‑y; non-adjusted sales increased by 8.6%, y-o-y. Non‑adjusted sales for repair of motor vehicles increased by 10.0%, y-o-y, and sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) increased by 8.2%, y-o-y.

We point out that since the way estimates for non-surveyed part of the sample are made has changed, previously released data may be revised more.
