Lower sale of food continued

In November, sales in retail trade including automotive segment after seasonal and working day adjustment decreased at constant prices by 0.7%, month-on-month. Only working days adjusted sales increased by 0.5%, year-on-year, the same as non-adjusted. The y-o-y increase of sales was influenced mainly by sale of motor vehicles and non-food goods.

After seasonal and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles decreased at constant prices by 0.7% in November, m-o-m; only working days adjusted increased by 0.5%, year-on-year. The same growth was recorded also for non-adjusted sales. The y-o-y increase of non-adjusted sales was contributed to (at the same number of working days in November 2010 and 2011) by sale of motor vehicles and motorcycles (including spare parts) and non-food goods (see Table 2).

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) decreased by 2.5% at constant prices, m-o-m; in the year-on-year comparison, both adjusted for working days and non-adjusted increased by 2.5%. Non-adjusted sales for sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) increased by 3.9%, y-o-y, while for maintenance and repair of motor vehicles they dropped by 5.7%.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices increased by 0.1%, m-o-m; working days adjusted dropped by 0.4%, y-o-y, the same as non-adjusted. Non-adjusted sales for food decreased by 2.8%, y-o-y, for automotive fuel by 2.2%, while for non-food goods increased by 1.7%, y-o-y.

The biggest share in the overall decrease in retail trade belonged to lower sale of food both in specialised and non-specialised stores (-1.4% and -3.0%, respectively). From important assortment groups of non-food goods, a drop was recorded in sales of automotive fuel (-2.2%) and sale of dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores (-0.8%). On the contrary, increase of sales at constant prices was reported in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (+10.0%), retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores (+5.5%), retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (+2.9%), and sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (+0.5%). Retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet continued to increase (+8.8%), however, compared to the first half-year of 2011 the growth rate slowed down.

The price deflator (CZ-NACE 47) related to the corresponding period of the previous year was 103.0% and it was influenced mainly by higher prices of automotive fuel and food. On the contrary, the deepest price falls were in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores.
