Growth of the sale of motor vehicles the second highest for the last 3 years
In January, sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles after seasonal, calendar and working day adjustment increased at constant prices by 4.8%, month-on-month; only working days adjusted (WDA) increased by 5.1%, year-on-year. The y-o-y increase of seasonally non-adjusted sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles by 6.8%, y-o-y, was influenced mainly by sale of motor vehicles and non-food goods. There was also a partial influence of 1 working day more in January 2011 compared to January 2010.

After seasonal, calendar and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles increased in January by 4.8%, at constant prices, m-o-m; only working days adjusted increased by 5.1%, year-on-year. The increase of seasonally non-adjusted sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles by 6.8%, y-o-y, was influenced mainly by sale of motor vehicles and motorcycles (+4.2 percentage points) and non-food goods (+2.6 p.p.) and slightly also by sale of food (+0.4 p.p.); there was also an influence of a higher number of working days (+1). On the contrary, a negative influence on the sales development came from the sale of automotive fuel (-0.9 p.p.; see Table 2).

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) increased by 8.9% at constant prices, m-o-m, and in the year-on-year comparison, adjusted for working days, they increased by 15.4%. Seasonally non-adjusted sales increased by 19.2%, y-o-y, of which for sale of motor vehicles and motorcycles (including spare parts) it was by 20.3% and for maintenance and repair of motor vehicles by 13.1%. The highest y-o-y growth of sales was influenced to a large extent by a low comparison basis (January sales in 2010 were under the level of the year 2006; the values of the year 2008 were not reached even in January 2011) and also continuing special offers.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices increased by 3.1%, m-o-m; WDA increased by 1.5%, y-o-y. Seasonally non-adjusted sales increased by 2.7%, y-o-y, of which sales for non-food goods increased by 7.1%, for sale of food by 1.3%, for sale of automotive fuel, on the contrary, decreased by 7.7%.
Retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet was growing the fastest (+21.0%). A marked sales increase was recorded in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (+14.2%), and retail sale of clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores (+12.1%). The growth of retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores by 6.3% was the highest for the last 28 months. Compared to January 2010, better results were also in retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (+5.4%), and dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, and cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores (+4.2%). Sales in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating increased by 1.5%; of that, enterprises with 100+ employees (to which also retail chains belong) recorded a sales increase by 3.0%. Besides the already mentioned retail sale of automotive fuel in specialised stores, sales dropped also in retail sale via stalls and markets (-13.6%), in other retail sale in non-specialised stores (-3.6%), in retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (-1.4%), retail sale of second-hand goods in stores, and other retail sale not in stores, stalls or markets (both the same -1.0%).
The price deflator related to the corresponding period of the previous year was 101.1%. Continuing significant price increase was recorded in retail sale of automotive fuel in specialised stores (+11.8%), markedly smaller increase was reported for prices of goods sold in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating (+2.2%), and dispensing chemist and medical and orthopaedic goods in specialised stores (+0.3%). The biggest price drops were reported for prices of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (-7.6%), and clothing, footwear and leather goods in specialised stores (-3.7%).
In January 2011, according to data released by Eurostat, seasonally adjusted retail sales (CZ-NACE 47) in the EU27 increased by 0.6% at constant prices, month-on-month; working day adjusted sales increased by 1.9%, year-on-year. The fastest increases of sales were reported for Poland (+13.1%), United Kingdom (+5.6%), and France (+4.3%), while the deepest decrease of sales was in Malta (-9.7%), Romania (-5.8%), and Portugal (-5.4%).
