Retail trade: back to fall

In April, seasonally adjusted (SA) sales in retail trade including automotive segment decreased month-on-month by 2.3% at constant prices and by 4.2% in the year-on-year comparison. The y-o-y drop of seasonally non-adjusted sales by 4.5% owed mainly to sale of non-food goods and motor vehicles.

With seasonal, calendar and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including automotive segment decreased in April by 2.3%, at constant prices, m-o-m, and by 4.2% in the year-on-year comparison. Year-on-year drop of non-adjusted sales by 4.5% (with the same number of working days this year and last year) was owed mainly to sale of non-food goods and sale of motor vehicles (see Table 2).

Seasonally adjusted sales in sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) decreased by 5.3% at constant prices, m-o-m, and in the year-on-year comparison by 5.7%. Seasonally non-adjusted sales decreased, y-o-y, by 5.0%, the same for both the sale of motor vehicles and repair.

In retail sale including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales decreased, m-o-m, by 1.1% at constant prices, and by 3.6% in the year-on-year comparison. Seasonally non-adjusted sales decreased by 4.3%, y-o-y, of which sales of non-food goods dropped by 5.6%, sales of food, beverages and tobacco by 3.5% and sales of automotive fuel by 1.6%.

Among the observed assortments the biggest contribution to the total drop came from retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (contribution to the drop -1.5 p.p.) and retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating (-1.0 p.p.). The biggest sales fall was in other retail sale not in stores, stalls or markets (-11.7%), retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (-9.9%) and retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (-7.7%), retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (-6.3%), clothing and footwear (-6.1%) and in other retail sale in non-specialised stores (-5.6%). On the other hand, sales grew in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet (+3.8%) and in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (+2.7%).

The price deflator related to the corresponding period of the previous year was 100.9%. A marked price increase was recorded in the sale of fuel (+19.0%), markedly smaller increase was reported for prices of pharmaceutical and medical goods (+2.1%). By contrast, the biggest price drops were reported for prices of information and communication equipment (-8.6%), second-hand goods (-5.1%), other retail sale in non-specialized stores (-3.3%), goods sold via the Internet or mail order houses (-3.2%), clothing and footwear (-2.8%), culture and recreation products (-2.6%), and retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (-2.4%).

In April, according to data released by Eurostat, SA retail sales (CZ-NACE 47) in the EU27 decreased by 1.2% at constant prices, month-on-month, working day adjusted sales decreased by 1.6%, year-on-year. The biggest decreases were reported for Bulgaria and Lithuania (both -11.7%), Denmark (-8.3%) and Latvia (-7.7%), while the fastest growth of sales was reported for Malta (+8.7%).
