After seasonal and working day adjustment sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles stagnated at constant prices in July, m-o-m; only working days adjusted increased by 0.1%, year-on-year. Non-adjusted sales dropped in comparison to the corresponding period of 2010 by 1.7%, partially due to a lower number of working days (-1). The biggest influence on the y-o-y decrease came from retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating and retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores. On the contrary, growth in wholesale and retail trade and repair of motor vehicles and motorcycles had an opposite effect (see Table 2).

The biggest influence on the total decrease came from the lower sale of food: retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating dropped by 6.4% and retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores by 3.0%. For the first time since the beginning of the year, food sales dropped also at current prices (-1.7%). On the contrary, sales for clothing and footwear increased by 7.7%, retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores by 3.7% and retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores by 2.8%. Growth of sales via mail order houses or via Internet continued (+8.5%), however, the growth rate slowed down compared to the preceding months of 2011.

The price deflator related to the corresponding period of the previous year was 102.2% and it was influenced mainly by higher prices of automotive fuel and food. This development was reflected in the total price growth in retail sale in non-specialised stores with food, beverages or tobacco predominating and retail sale of food, beverages and tobacco in specialised stores (+4.8%). The deepest price falls were in retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (-10.7%), clothing and footwear (-2.8%), and other household equipment in specialised stores (-2.0%).
