Higher purchase of food stimulated by easter holidays

In March, sales in retail trade including the automotive segment after seasonal adjustment increased by 1.4% at constant prices, month-on-month. Working days adjusted sales decreased by 0.1%, y-o-y, non-adjusted by 3.3%, y-o-y. The y-o-y sales drop was influenced by lower sale in both the automotive segment and the retail trade alone.

Seasonally adjusted sales in retail trade including sale and repair of motor vehicles increased in March at constant prices by 1.4%, month-on-month. Year-on-year, working days adjusted sales decreased by 0.1%, non-adjusted dropped by 3.3%. The y-o-y sales drop was influenced by lower sales both in the automotive segment and the retail trade alone, partially also because in March 2013 there was 1 working day less than in March 2012.

Seasonally adjusted sales for sale and repair of motor vehicles (CZ-NACE 45) increased by 0.7% at constant prices, m-o-m. Year-on-year, working days adjusted and non-adjusted sales dropped (-3.5% and -8.9%, respectively). Sale of motor vehicles (including spare parts) decreased as well as sales for the repair of motor vehicles (both -8.9%).

In retail trade including sale of automotive fuel (CZ-NACE 47) seasonally adjusted sales at constant prices increased by 2.0%, m-o-m; working days adjusted sales increased by 1.6%, y-o-y. Non-adjusted sales dropped by 0.6%, y-o-y; for automotive fuel it was -4.0%, for non-food goods -2.5%, while for food they increased owing to nearing Easter holidays by 2.8%.

Decrease of sales was recorded mainly at: retail sale of cultural and recreation goods in specialised stores (-8.9%) and retail sale of other household equipment in specialised stores (-8.3%), further at sale of dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles in specialised stores (-4.2%) and retail sale of clothing and footwear in specialised stores (-3.3%). The aforementioned total increase of sales for food was totally owing to non-specialised stores (growth of sales +3.5%), at which consumers focused mainly on the offer of big chain stores (enterprises with 100+ employees in that group increased their sales by 4.9%). Also retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet was successful (+26.5%) as well as retail sale of information and communication equipment in specialised stores (growth by 17.7%).

The price deflator (CZ-NACE 47) related to the corresponding period of the previous year (VAT excluded) was 99.5%. The highest y-o-y growth of prices was recorded for food and dispensing chemist, medical and orthopaedic goods, cosmetic and toilet articles, while in most of non-food goods decreasing of prices continued, which was the most marked in the assortment of information and communication equipment.

For the entire first quarter of 2013 sales in retail trade including the automotive segment decreased at constant prices by 2.9%, y-o-y (in the Q1 2013 there were 2 working days and at the same time 1 calendar day less compared to the corresponding period of the previous year), of which in the automotive segment it was -6.8% and in the retail trade alone (including sale of automotive fuel) it was -1.2%. Sales for the automotive fuel dropped by 4.5%, for food and non-food goods it was both -0.7%.
