In December 2009, agricultural and industrial producer prices and construction work prices were higher by 4.2%, 0.5% and 0.2%, respectively. Prices of market services decreased by 2.1%.
In comparison to January 2009, agricultural and industrial producer prices and market services prices were lower by 6.3%, 1.5% and 0.7%, respectively. Construction work prices increased by 0.3%.

Monthly changes

Agricultural producer prices increased by 4.2% in total. Prices of crop products grew by 6.9% especially due to higher prices of vegetables (+13.6%), potatoes (+16.9%) and hops (+73.0%). Prices of animal products increased by 1.5%, higher were prices of milk (+4.3%). In contrast, prices of eggs and poultry dropped by 4.4% and 1.0%, respectively.

Industrial producer prices increased by 0.5% (+0.1% in December). Prices went up particularly in ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (+6.9%), ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (+6.2%) and ‘water supply’ (+3.7%). Prices went down primarily in ‘electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning’ by 1.2% (of these: ‘electricity’ by 3.6%) and ‘transport equipment’ by 1.0%.

Construction work prices and construction material input prices were higher by 0.2% and 0.4%, respectively.

Market services prices in the business sphere fell by 2.1%, affected by a 17.8% price decrease in advertising and market research services (lower prices in TV and radio advertising services by 29.3%). Prices in employment services were higher by 2.3%. Market services prices excluding advertising services in total remained unchanged.


Annual changes

Agricultural producer prices were down by 6.3% (-12.7% in December). Prices of crop products fell by 9.2%, mainly due to price decreases in oil plants (-19.7%), potatoes (-16.3%) and cereals (-13.3%). On the increase were prices of fruit (+2.9%), vegetables (+18.8%) and hops (+38.7%). Animal products prices dropped by 3.1%. Decreases were registered for prices of cattle for slaughter (-1.3%), milk (-1.8%), poultry (-2.7%) and pigs for slaughter (-8.6%). Prices of eggs increased (+3.9%).

Industrial producer prices went down by 1.5% (-0.8% in December). The most marked influence on the fall of the total index had a price decrease in ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ by 13.1%, ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ by 3.4%, ‘transport equipment’ by 5.1% and ‘electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning’ by 1.9% (of these: ‘electricity’ by 3.7%). Prices went up primarily in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ by 37.9% and ‘chemicals and chemical products’ by 17.1%. Prices in ‘water supply’ rose by 4.3%.
Among the main industrial groupings, the biggest price decrease was reported for ‘intermediate goods’ (-4.4%); the highest increase was recorded for ‘energy’ (+4.5%).

Construction work prices were up by 0.3% (like in December). Construction material input prices were down by 2.9% (-3.6% in December).

Market services prices in the business sphere reported in total the first drop (-0.7%) since 1999 (+0.8% in December). Decreasing were prices in advertising and market research services (-8.9%), freight transport (-0.8%) and architectural and engineering services (-1.2%).
In contrast, higher prices were in employment services (+8.4%) and computer programming, consultancy (+5.6%). Market services prices excluding advertising services increased by 0.2%.


Industrial producer prices in the EU – December 2009*

According to the Eurostat News Release, industrial producer prices in the EU27 remained stable in December (+0.2% in November), month-on-month. Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were recorded in Bulgaria (+0.9%), Sweden (+0.8%), Lithuania (+0.6%) and Latvia (+0.5%). Prices in Slovakia went up by 0.1% and remained unchanged in Germany. The largest decreases were observed in Malta (-0.7%) and Denmark (-0.6%).
EU27 producer prices decreased by 1.7% (-3.3% in November) year-on-year. The largest decreases were observed in Latvia (-10.1%), Malta (-8.8%), Lithuania (-5.6%), the Netherlands (-5.5%), Germany (-5.2%) and Slovakia (-5.1%). The biggest increases were observed in Greece (+4.5%), Romania (+3.6%) and the United Kingdom (+3.2%).

Except for the construction work price indices, the data are finalised. Construction work price indices are updated using the finished quarterly survey and the finalised data are released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
