Producer price indices - May 2016

The fall in prices of agricultural producers continued

In May 2016 compared with the previous month, agricultural producer prices went down by 2.0%. Industrial producer prices and prices of market services were both higher by 0.4% and 0.1%, respectively. Construction work prices stayed unchanged. In comparison to May 2015, agricultural producer prices were lower by 7.1% and industrial producer prices fell by 4.8%. Construction work prices grew by 1.0% and prices of market services increased by 0.2%.

 

Month-on-month comparison:

Agricultural producer prices decreased by 2.0%. Prices of potatoes (-7.7%), eggs (-5.6%), milk (-3.6%), poultry (-3.1%) and cereals (-2.4%) went down. Prices of pigs for slaughter went up by 0.8%.

Prices of industrial producers went up by 0.4%. Prices increased primarily in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’. Prices were higher in ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (+0.5%), basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (+0.4%) and ‘mining and quarrying’ (+0.3%). Prices went down in ‘food products, beverages, tobacco’ (-0.2%).

According to an estimate, construction work prices stayed unchanged and construction material input prices grew by 0.5%.

Market services prices in the business sphere rose by 0.1% due to the price increasing of postal and courier services’ (+5.6%). Market services prices excluding advertising services went up by 0.2%.
 

Year-on-year comparison:

Agricultural producer prices went down by 7.1% (-7.2% in April). Prices of crop products went down by 3.1%. Lower were prices of cereals (-11.2%) and oil plants (-0.8%). Higher were prices of vegetables (+24.1%) and potatoes (+48.5%). Prices of animal products fell by 11.7% due to decreasing prices of milk (-20.1%), pigs for slaughter (-10.0%), eggs (-4.9%) and cattle for slaughter (-2.1%). On the increase were prices of poultry by 0.2%.

Prices of industrial producers went down by 4.8% (-4.7% in April). Prices decreased particularly in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’. Lower were prices in ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (-12.3%), ‘mining and quarrying’ (-7.1%) and ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (-5.5%). Prices went down in ‘electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning’ (-4.0%). Prices were lower in ‘food products, beverages, tobacco’ (-3.0%). Prices rose more significantly in ‘water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation services’ (+1.6%).

Among the main industrial groupings, prices of ‘energy’ (-10.2%) decreased the most, y-o-y.

According to an estimate, construction work prices rose by 1.0% (+1.2% in April) and construction material input prices fell by 1.9% (-2.1% in April).

Prices of market services in the business sphere grew by 0.2% (like in April). Increasing were prices in postal and courier services’ (+5.6%), ‘employment services’ (+4.8%), ‘computer programming, consultancy and related services’ (+1.7%), ‘advertising and market research services’ (+1.5%) and ‘architectural and engineering services’ (+1.4%). On the decrease were prices of ‘land transport services and transport services via pipelines’ (-0.8%) and ‘insurance, reinsurance and pension funding services, except compulsory social security’ (-4.4%). Market services prices excluding advertising services increased by 0.1% (in April stayed unchanged). 
 

Industrial producer prices in the EU – April 2016*

According to the Eurostat News Releases, industrial producer prices went down in April by 0.2% (+0.4% in March) in EU28, month-on-month. Among the Member States for which data are available, the largest decreases were observed in Croatia (-1.5%) and Sweden (-1.0%). Prices decreased in Slovakia (-0.1%), remained stable in Germany and rose in the Czech Republic and Austria (+0.1% both) and Poland (+0.4%). Prices rose the most in Ireland (+1.3%).

Industrial producer prices decreased in April by 4.2% (-4.1% in March) in EU28, year-on-year. Industrial producer prices fell in all Member States except Malta (+1.0%). The largest decreases were observed in the Netherlands (-10.3%), Greece (-8.8%) and Belgium (-6.9%). Prices were lower in Slovakia (-5.8%), the Czech Republic (-4.7%), Austria (-3.8%), Germany (-3.0%) and Poland (-1.8%).

Except for the construction work price indices, the published data are finalised. Estimates of the construction work price indices are carrying out on the 9th calendar day of the following day. Construction work price indices are updated using the finished quarterly survey and the finalised data are released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
