Czechs found their way to the luxury hotels

Q2 2012, the number of guests’ overnight stays in collective accommodation establishments increased by 0.2% year-on-year, of which non-residents by 1.6%, on contrary nights spent of residents went down by 1.5%. In total, there were more guests by 2.6% in this period, foreigners by 2.6% and residents by 0.4%.

The number of overnight stays in collective accommodation establishments totalled 9.7 million in Q2 2012; this was by 0.2% more than in the same period of the previous year. The number of overnight stays went up by 1.6%, residents stayed overnight by 1.5% less than in Q2 2011. A year-on-year growth was recorded by all categories of hotels apart of one-star hotels which dropped by 8.6%. Other collective accommodation establishments reported a decrease in the number of overnight stays, for instance pensions by 0.2%, hostels for tourists by 1.9% and camp sites by 5.3%. From regional point of view, the highest increase was shown in Jihocesky and Karlovarsky region (both by 8.3%), in contrast the highest decrease was recorded in Olomoucky region (by 12.4%).

A total of 3.5 million guests arrived in collective accommodation establishments; this was 1.6% more than in Q2 2011. The number of non-residents went up by 2.6% and the number of residents by 0.4%. According to the category of accommodation establishments two-star hotels reported a growth by 14.1%, five-star hotels by 6.2% and similar like for overnight stays the number of arrivals went down in one-star hotels by 3.5%. There were few guests in camp sites, hostels for tourists and other establishments not included elsewhere compared to the same period of last year. Only holiday dwellings were visited more by 4.7%. Regionally, the highest growth was recorded in Karlovarsky region (by 11.9%), Plzensky (by 8.3%) and in regions Jihocesky and Liberecky (both by 4.3%). The highest decrease was shown in regions Olomoucky and Stredocesky (both equally by 3.5%).

The highest number of foreign guests (by nationality) came traditionally from Germany (382 thousand); this was by 1.0% less than a year ago. Second largest group was guests from Russia (188 thousand) with the y-o-y increase in arrivals by 21.6%. Third place was taken by citizens from the USA (115 thousand, by 18.3% more y-o-y). Over 100 thousand of tourists came also from Poland, little bit less than 108 thousands, which was by 3.7% less than in Q2 2011.

Spa accommodation establishments were visited by 194 thousand guests in Q2 2012; this was 1.5% up y-o-y, of which the number of residents went up by 3.5% and in contrast non-residents went down by 0.6%. Foreign guest extended their stays, but domestic guests shortened their trips by 1.3 days. In Karlovarsky region, which constantly shows the share more than half of the number of arrivals as well as overnight stays among spa establishments, the number of arrivals of non-residents increased by 4.0% and residents even by 11.5%.

Rooms of hotels and boarding houses (pensions) were used from 46.2%; this was by 0.5 p.p. more than in the same period of the previous year. Five-star hotels with the highest utilisation from all hotels (68.0%) increased their usage by 4.5 p.p. Utilisation of four-star hotels decreased by 0.3 p.p. to the level of 60.2%. A decrease in use of rooms reported also three-star hotels (by 1.4 p.p); in contrast other hotels and pensions raised their utilisation (by 1.8 p.p.).
