Growth of foreign guest occupancy continued

Q2 2010, the number of overnight stays in collective accommodation establishments decreased by 0.9% year-on-year, of which residents decreased by 5.4%, on the contrary non-residents went up by 3.3%. In total, more guests arrived by 0.2%, of which foreigners increased by 4.4%, on the contrary non-residents went down by 4.5%.

The number of overnight stays in collective accommodation establishments totalled 8.8 million in Q2 2010; this was by 0.9% less than in the same period of the previous year. The number of overnight stays of non-residents went up by 3.3%, on the contrary the number of residents was by 5.4% down. The sharpest drop reported kemps (by 33.4%) and holiday dwellings and hostel for tourists (by 16.7%), which suffered from this year’s bed spring weather (and where domestic guests overnight in particular). In contrast a remarkable year-on-year increase was recorded by upper class hotels (five-star hotels by 16.3% and four-star hotels by 15.9%) with dominance of foreign clients. Relatively good result of incoming tourism could have been very probably even better if there had not been lower growth in April, which was influenced by stoppage of air transportation due to the eruption of a volcano in Island (there was an increase in the number of overnight stays in upper class hotels by 20% in May and June; but in April it did not reach 10%). Development in the number of overnight stays by the category of establishments was mirrored in results by regional point of view, where the highest increase by 6.4% was recorded in Prague (with remarkable share of four-star and five-star hotels), in contrast the highest decrease by 11.5% was in Jihočesky region, where there is the highest number of kemps and holiday dwellings.

A total of 3.1 million guests was recorded; this was 0.2% up on Q2 2009. The number of foreign guests increased by 4.4%; the number of residents was lower by 4.5%. Development in establishments by category was similar as in the number of overnight stays; by regional point of view it was the same as for the highest growth (Prague with 8.9%), the highest drop was shown in Ustecky region (by 13.9%). The highest number of foreign guests, in spite of year-on-year slight decrease by 0.7%, arrived from Germany. In spite of a financial crisis and problems with gaining visa permit guests from Russia were the second as far as the number of guests was concerned, their number was even higher by 22.4% than in Q2 2009. From top ten countries, remarkably high increase was shown by tourists from USA (by 15.1%) and France (by 12.8%). Guests from Italy arrived in contrast by 15.1% less.

At spa accommodation establishments the number of overnight stays totalled 1.9 million; this was 3.6% up year-on-year. The number of overnight stays of non-residents went up by 2.8% and residents by 4.2%. Residents formed as for the number of guests as well as the number of overnight stays more than half of all accommodated guests and apart from Russians and Ukrainians they spent the longest time in spa establishments. The number of nights by Russians was in average 13.0, by Ukrainians 12.2 and domestic guests 11.6 (the average number of overnight stays in total was 10.4). From foreign guests Germans went on to be the numerous from the clients (arrivals 54.0% and overnight stays 51.3%), the second were Russians (22.6% and 32.9% respectively). An importance of other nationalities did not reached in the number of arrivals 1.9%; in the number of overnight stays 2.6% (both shares implied to Ukrainians).

Rooms of hotels and similar establishments were used from 42.9% in Q2 2010; this was by 2.9 p.p. more than in the same period of the previous year. Four-star hotels with the highest utilisation of 54.5% increased their usage by 4.1 p.p.; five-star hotels with utilisation of 54.0% even by 4.8 p.p. A growth by 1.4 p.p. was shown other hotels and boarding houses, although their utilisation of rooms was as usual the lowest (35.8%).



Methodological note:
1 ) Data on guests at collective tourist accommodation establishments are obtained from the monthly CR1-12 sample survey and the quarterly CR2-04 survey. Data mentioned are sums of the data processed from submitted questionnaires and imputed data on the accommodation establishments that failed to report. Net use of room is the number of overnight stays in a particular period divided by the number of room-days (stated as a percentage).
