Growth of the number of guests continued already for the twelfth successive quarter

In the Q1 2024, 4.1 million guests arrived in collective accommodation establishments; they spent 10.6 million nights there. Year-on-year (y-o-y), the number of guests increased by 9.9% and the number of overnight stays of guests in collective accommodation establishments increased by 7.7%. A higher number of both guests and nights spent was recorded for both domestic and foreign clientele. A continual y-o-y increase in the number of guests and overnight stays has continued already since the Q2 2021. 

The number of overnight stays of guests in collective accommodation establishments increased by 7.7%, compared to the corresponding period of 2023, and reached 10.6 million nights in total in the Q1 2024. Foreign clientele spent in Czechia by 17.2% more nights, year-on-year, and the number of overnight stays of domestic guests increased by 0.6%.

“In the first quarter of 2024, 4.1 million guests accommodated in surveyed establishments, which was an increase by 9.9% of arrivals. Compared to the corresponding period of 2023, by almost a fifth more foreign guests arrived and the number of domestic guests increased by 3.6%,” Roman Mikula, Head of the Tourism and Environmental Statistics Unit of the Czech Statistical Office (CZSO), stated.

Hotels recorded a year-on-year increase in the number of guests by 11.9% and 3.2 million guests accommodated there in the Q1 2024. Tourists spent 7.4 million nights in those establishments, which was a y-o-y increase in the number of overnight stays by 10.5%. Boarding houses recorded a y-o-y increase in the number of guests by 0.5%, however, the number of overnight stays in that category decreased by 1.6%. Other collective establishments, which include, for example, tourist campsites, holiday dwellings, and hostels reported growth of both the number of guests (by 7.7%) and the number of overnight stays (by 4.5%).

As for Regions, the number of accommodated guests increased in almost all Regions of the Czech Republic in the Q1 2024, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The only exception was the Pardubický Region, in which the number of guests decreased by 1.6%. The highest y-o-y increase of accommodated tourists (+16.9%) was recorded in Prague, to which 1.6 million clients arrived. An increase in the number of guests by over a tenth was also observed in the Vysočina Region, in the Jihočeský Region, and in the Karlovarský Region. The number of overnight stays increased in 9 Regions, the most in the Vysočina Region and in Prague. On the other hand, a decrease in the number of nights was recorded in the Liberecký Region, in the Plzeňský Region, in the Pardubický Region, in the Ústecký Region, and in the Olomoucký Region. Residents spent the highest number of nights in the Královéhradecký Region, whereas non-residents in Prague, as usually.

In the Q1 2024, the number of foreign guests (non-residents; by citizenship) who accommodated in collective accommodation establishments increased by 18.1%, compared to the corresponding period of the previous year. The highest number of visitors came from Germany (0.5 million) and over 100 thousand accommodated guests were also from Slovakia, Poland, the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, and from Italy. Among the top ten most frequent nationalities (citizenships) only guests from Ukraine reported a decrease, namely by 11%. Clients from Germany, Slovakia, and Poland spent here the highest number of nights (1.5 million, 347 thousand, and 328 thousand, respectively).
