Sales in services decreased by 1% in 2010

In Q4 2010, seasonally adjusted sales in services decreased by 1.6%, quarter-on-quarter, at constant prices. After only working day adjustment they dropped by 2.5%, year-on-year, without adjustment by 2.1%. The sales growth was recorded only in transportation and storage, and in administrative and support service activities, both by 2.0%.
For the entire year 2010, sales in services decreased by 1.0%, y-o-y, at constant prices. After only working day adjustment, they decreased by 1.3%, year-on-year. The overall development was mitigated by an increase of sales in the most important division in terms of volume - transportation and storage.

In Q4 2010, seasonally adjusted sales in services 1) decreased by 1.6%, quarter-on-quarter, at constant prices. After only working day adjustment (in Q4 2010 there was one working day more) they dropped by 2.5%, year-on-year, without adjustment by 2.1%. The sales growth was recorded only in transportation and storage, and in administrative and support service activities, both by 2.0%.

Year-on-year development of not seasonally adjusted sales in services broken down by CZ-NACE division:
  • sales in transportation and storage increased by 2.0%; individual transport divisions developed differently. Sales for postal and courier activities increased by 11% (the highest growth since 2000), which was related to the increasing interest in retail sale via mail order houses or via Internet. Sales increased also in land transport and transport via pipelines (+2.8%) and in warehousing and support activities for transportation (+2.2%). Decrease of sales was reported by water transport (-23.4%) and air transport (-15.2%), which was influenced by organizational changes in some airline companies resulting in transfer of subsidiary activities out of the industry.
  • sales in accommodation and food service activities have been dropping since Q1 2008, this time by 4.3%. The drop was influenced mainly by development in food and beverage service activities (-8.1%). In accommodation, sales increased in Q4 for the second time in 2010 (+4.1%).
  • sales in information and communication decreased by 2.5%; it was influenced mainly by lower sales in telecommunications (drop by -5.4%), and in computer programming, consultancy and related activities (drop by -3.1%). Sales growth was recorded in motion picture activities (+2.4%), publishing activities (+4.1%), and programming and broadcasting activities (+14.2%).
  • sales in real estate activities dropped by 5.1%, mainly due to lower sales of real estate activities on a fee or contract basis (-13.9%). Buying and selling of own real estate and renting and operating of own or leased real estate decreased by 0.4%.
  • sales in professional, scientific and technical activities2) dropped by 6.4%; a decrease was observed in all of the surveyed divisions. The deepest fall of sales was in the most significant group as for its volume - architectural and engineering activities (-9.7%) and in other professional, scientific and technical activities, which include mainly photographic, interpreting and design services (-9.8%). The smallest decrease was recorded in advertising and market research (-1.2%).
  • sales in administrative and support service activities3) increased by 2.0%. Further growth was reported for employment activities (+14.7%) and for office administrative, office support and other business support activities (+3.2%); on the contrary, a drop was recorded in rental and leasing activities (-2.9%) and services to buildings and landscape activities (-0.9%).
In 2010, sales 1) in services fell by 1.0% at constant prices, y-o-y. After only working day adjustment (in 2010 there were 2 working days more) they decreased by 1.3%, y-o-y. The overall development was mitigated by sales growth in the most important division in terms of volume - transportation and storage.

Not seasonally adjusted sales in services broken down by CZ-NACE division in the year-on-year comparison developed as follows:
  • increase of sales in transportation and storage (+3.7%) was contributed to mainly by the most important division in terms of volume - land transport and transport via pipelines (+5.1%) and by warehousing and support activities for transportation (+5.0%). Sales in water transport decreased by 14.4% as for the entire year, although in Q3 they grew. In air transport, a double-digit decrease of sales continued for already the second year. Sales in postal and courier activities increased by 8.0%.
  • in accommodation and food service activities sales dropped by 5.1%. A decrease was recorded in all quarters of the year; the biggest drop was recorded in Q1 (-7.5%). A higher sales decrease was reported mainly for food and beverage service activities (-7.4%), in accommodation sales dropped by 0.5%, mainly due to the development in the first half-year.
  • sales in information and communication decreased by 1.4% as for the entire year, which was influenced the most by a drop in telecommunications (-5.2%). Decrease of sales was recorded also in the so-called motion picture activities (-4.5%), which include primarily motion picture, video and television programme production, sound recording and music publishing activities. Programming and broadcasting activities, on the other hand, reported a continual growth. Despite a decrease in Q1, sales increased as for the entire year also in publishing activities. A sales increase was recorded, as for the entire year, also for computer programming, consultancy and related activities, and for information service activities, although both the divisions recorded a drop in Q4.
  • sales in real estate activities decreased by 4.3%, of which in real estate activities on a fee or contract basis by 11.5%, and in buying and selling of own real estate and renting and operating of own or leased real estate by 0.3%.
  • sales in professional, scientific and technical activities2) were by 5.2% down. The same as in 2009, all divisions recorded a drop; the biggest fall was in other professional, scientific and technical activities (-10.6%) and in architectural and engineering activities (-5.8%).
  • sales in administrative and support service activities3) decreased by 0.4%, however, since half of the year they have been reporting growth. In comparison to the low level in 2009, sales increased for employment activities (+8.1%), while sales for travel agency, tour operator and other reservation service and related activities decreased (-5.5%). Office administrative, office support and other business support activities grew throughout all quarters (as for the entire year the growth was by 3.0%).

1) For the purpose of News Releases, services include the following CZ-NACE sections – Transportation and storage (H), Accommodation and food service activities (I), Information and communication (J), Real estate activities (L), Professional, scientific and technical activities – without Scientific research and development and Veterinary activities (M without 72 and 75), Administrative and support service activities without Landscape service activities (N without 81.3).
2) For the purpose of News Releases section M – Professional, scientific and technical activities does not include CZ-NACE 72 – Scientific research and development and CZ-NACE 75 – Veterinary activities.
3) For the purpose of News Releases section N – Administrative and support service activities does not include CZ-NACE 81.3 – Landscape service activities.
