Producer price indices - October 2013

Y-o-y movement of industrial producer prices stagnated

In October 2013 compared with the previous month, agricultural producer prices were lower by 1.8%. Prices of industrial producer fell by 0.4%. Prices of market services grew by 0.2%. Construction work prices stayed unchanged.

In comparison to October 2012, prices of agricultural producer decreased by 3.3%. Prices of construction works and market services prices were both lower by 1.0% and 2.3%, respectively. Prices of industrial producer stayed unchanged.


Month-on-month comparison:

Agricultural producer prices were lower by 1.8%. Prices of potatoes (starch potatoes) decreased by 10.1%, as well as oil plants (-4.0%) and poultry (-3.0%). Prices of pigs for slaughter (+1.6%), milk (+2.5%) and eggs (+13.9%) increased.

Prices of industrial producers went down by 0.4%. Prices decreased primarily in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (-4.7%), ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (-2.2%) and ‘food products, beverages, tobacco’ (-0.3%), thereof ‘prepared animal feeds’ (-3.6%), ‘grain mill, starches and starch products’ (-2.7%) and ‘preserved meat and meat products’ (-0.8%). Prices were higher in ‘electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning’ (+0.5%) and ‘mining and quarrying’ (+0.4%).

According to an estimate, construction work prices stayed unchanged and construction material input prices went down by 0.1%.

Market services prices in the business sphere increased by 0.2%. Prices of ‘advertising and market research services’ grew by 2.3%. Market services prices in total excluding advertising services stayed unchanged.

Year-on-year comparison:

Agricultural producer prices went down by 3.3% (-0.1% in September). Prices of crop products fell by 8.6%, thereof cereals (-19.8%) and oil plants (-18.0%). Higher were prices of potatoes (+68.9%) and fresh vegetables (+18.2%). Prices of animal products increased by 6.6%. On the increase were prices of milk (+18.6%), pigs for slaughter (+3.1%) and poultry (+2.2%). Prices of eggs went down by 22.7%.

Industrial producer prices remained stable in total (+0.6% in September), y-o-y. Prices went down particularly in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (-8.5%), ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (-3.1%), ‘mining and quarrying’ (-3.0%) and ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (-1.8%). Prices went up in ‘electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning’ (+3.8%), ‘transport equipment’ (+1.7%), thereof ‘parts and accessories for motor vehicles’ (+2.5%). Prices rose in ‘food products, beverages, tobacco’ (+0.7%), thereof ‘dairy products’ (+11.6%) and ‘preserved meat and meat products’ (+1.6%). On the other hand, lower were prices in ‘vegetable and animal oils and fats’ (-18.4%) and ‘prepared animal feeds’ (-7.7%).
Among the main industrial groupings prices of ‘non-durable consumer goods’ (+1.3%) increased the most, decreased prices of ‘intermediate goods’ (-1.3%) and ‘energy’ (-0.2%), year-on-year.

According to an estimate, construction work prices went down by 1.0% (-1.2% in September after the specification) and construction material input prices fell by 0.1% (like in September).

Market services prices in the business sphere decreased by 2.3% (-1.9% in September). On the decrease were prices of ‘telecommunication services’ (-21.0%), ‘storage’ (-19.8%), ‘land transport services and transport services via pipelines’ (-2.8%) and ‘legal and accounting services’ (-1.3%). Increasing were prices in ‘postal and courier services’ (+8.3%) and prices of ‘advertising and market research services’ (+5.3%). Market services prices excluding advertising services decreased by 2.6% (-2.5% in September).

Industrial producer prices in the EU – September 2013*
According to the Eurostat News Releases, industrial producer prices increased by 0.1% in September (like in August) in EU28, month-on-month. Among the Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were recorded in Estonia (+1.0%), Lithuania and Austria (+0.5% both). Prices rose in Germany (+0.3%), Poland (+0.2%), the Czech Republic and Slovakia (+0.1% both). The largest decreases were observed in Cyprus (-0.9%), Belgium (-0.8%) and Ireland (-0.6%).

Industrial producer prices decreased by 0.5% in September (-0.4% in August) in EU28, year-on-year. The largest decreases were recorded in Cyprus (-3.6%), Bulgaria (-3.5%) and the Netherlands (-2.7%). Prices went down in Poland (-1.7%), Austria (-1.3%), Slovakia (-0.8%) and Germany (-0.4%). Prices rose in the Czech Republic (+0.6%). The highest increases were observed in Estonia (+10.8%), Denmark (+2.5%) and Ireland (+2.1%).

Except for the construction work price indices, the published data are finalised. Estimates of the construction work price indices are carrying out on the 9th calendar day of the following day. Construction work price indices are updated using the finished quarterly survey and the finalised data are released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
