Producer price indices - May 2012
The lowest y-o-y industrial price index since May 2010
In May 2012 compared with the previous month, agricultural producer prices and market services prices increased by 0.8% and 0.2%, respectively. Industrial producer prices and construction work prices stayed unchanged.
In comparison to May 2011, prices of agricultural producers, construction works and market services were lower by 2.6%, 0.6% and 0.8%, respectively. Industrial producer prices increased by 1.7%.
Month-on-month comparison:
Aricultural producer prices in total increased (+0.8%). Prices of crop products rose by 3.6%. Higher were prices of vegetables* (+18.0%), oil plants (+5.0%) and cereals (+3.3%). Prices of animal products decreased (-2.4%) due to lower prices of eggs (-18.3%) and milk (-3.2%). In contrast, on the increase were prices of pigs for slaughter, poultry (+0.9% both) and cattle for slaughter (+0.6%).
Prices of industrial producers remained stable in total. Prices went up primarily in ‘transport equipment’ (+1.2%), of these particularly in ‘parts and accessories for motor vehicles’ (+1.6%). Prices increased in ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (+0.9%) and ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (+0.6%). The most important decrease was recorded in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (-3.8%). Prices decreased in ‘food products, beverages tobacco’ (-0.2%), the most in ‘dairy products’ (-2.1%) and ‘bakery and farinaceous products’ (-0.4%).
According to an estimate, construction work prices stayed unchanged. Construction material input prices grew by 0.3%.
Market services prices in the business sphere grew by 0.2%, affected by price increase in advertising and market research services (+1.9%). In contrast, real estate services (-0.2%) and telecommunication services (-0.1%) fell. Market services prices in total excluding advertising services stayed unchanged.
Year-on-year comparison:
Agricultural producer prices were lower by 2.6% (-2.8% in April). Prices of crop products fell by 8.3%. Lower prices were especially registered for prices of potatoes (-56.0%). On the decrease were also prices of fruit (-8.3%) and cereals (-7.5%). For the first time after twelve months, prices of vegetables were higher (+18.4%). Animal products prices grew (+5.5%), due to higher price of eggs (+77.9%) and pigs for slaughter (+14.6%). On the increase were also prices of cattle for slaughter (+8.7%) and poultry (+2.0%). Prices of milk (-4.1%) decreased.
Industrial producer prices gained 1.7% (+2.2% in April). The price level was more significantly influenced by the growth of prices in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (+8.8%), ‘chemical and chemical products’ (+6.2%) and ‘rubber and plastic products, other non-metallic mineral products’ (+3.1%).
Prices increased also in ‘food products, beverages, tobacco’ (+1.6%), of these particularly in ‘other food products’ (+7.2%) and ‘preserved meat and meat products’ (+4.3%). The substantial decreases were observed in ‘grain mill products, starches and starch products’ (-10.7%), ‘vegetable and animal oils and fats’ (-6.6%) and ‘dairy products’ (-3.3%).
Prices decreased in ‘mining and quarrying’ (-6.0%), particularly in ‘coal and lignite’ (-11.1%).
Among the main industrial groupings, prices of ‘energy’ (+2.5%) increased the most, y-o-y.
According to an estimate, construction work prices were down by 0.6% (-0.7% in April). Construction material input prices were up by 1.8% (same as in April).
Market services prices in the business sphere decreased by 0.8% (same as in April). Decreasing were prices in advertising and market research services (-4.1%), architectural and engineering services (-2.6%), real estate services (-1.0%) and telecommunication services (-0.6%). On the increase were prices of freight transport services (+1.2%) and insurance services (+1.1%). Market services prices excluding advertising services decreased by 0.3% in total (-0.2% in April).
Industrial producer prices in the EU – April 2012**
According to the Eurostat News Releases industrial producer prices in the EU27 remained stable in April (+0.5% in March), month-on-month. Among the Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were recorded in Bulgaria, Denmark and Ireland (all +1.1%). Prices rose in Poland (+0.9%), Germany (+0.2%) and remained stable in the Czech Republic, Slovakia and Austria. The highest decreases were recorded in Spain (-0.8%) and Sweden (-0.5%).
EU27 producer prices rose by 2.8% in April (+3.9% in March), year-on-year. The largest increases were observed in Cyprus (+8.3%), Lithuania (+7.1%) and Hungary (+7.0%). Prices rose in Poland (+4.2%), Slovakia (+3.9%), Germany (+2.4%), the Czech Republic (+2.2%) and Austria (+1.0%).The only decrease was recorded in Sweden (-0.5%).

Market services price indices: 15th calendar day of reference month / 7th calendar day of the following month
Except for the construction work price indices, the published data are finalised. Estimates of the construction work price indices are carrying out on the 9th calendar day of the following day. Construction work price indices are updated using the finished quarterly survey and the finalised data are released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
