The considerable growth of prices of cereals

In August 2010, agricultural producer prices and market services prices increased by 3.0% and 0.1%, respectively. Industrial producer prices and construction work prices decreased by 0.4% and 0.1%, respectively.
In comparison to August 2009, agricultural producer prices and industrial producer prices were higher by 8.8% and 1.8%, respectively. Construction work prices and market services prices decreased by 0.3% and 1.0%, respectively.

Monthly changes

Agricultural producer prices increased by 3.0% in total. Prices of crop products grew by 6.1%, due to higher prices of cereals (+10.3%, particularly wheat). Prices of fruit, vegetables, oil plants and potatoes grew by 16.5%, 7.8%, 2.8% and 1.9%, respectively. Prices of animal products decreased by 0.2%. Decreases were recorded for prices of cattle and pigs for slaughter and eggs by 0.4%, 0.7% and 8.4%, respectively. Prices of milk (+0.4%) and poultry (+1.0%) grew.

Industrial producer prices decreased by 0.4% (the highest drop in the year). Prices went down in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (-4.0%), ‘transport equipment’ (-1.6%) and ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (-1.3%). Prices decreased in ‘food products, beverages, tobacco’ (-0.2%). Prices went up the most in ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (+0.8%).

According to an estimate, construction work prices fell by 0.1%, construction material input prices increased by 0.2%.

Market services prices in the business sphere grew by 0.1%, affected by price increase of 1.6% in information services. Prices in other services stagnated or slightly increased. Price decreases were only registered in office administrative and other support services (-0.2%). Market services prices excluding advertising services increased in total by 0.1%.

Annual changes

Agricultural producer prices were up by 8.8% after 23 months (-0.6% in July). Prices of crop products grew by 11.5%. Considerable increases were registered for prices of cereals (+10.9%), potatoes (+19.1%), fruit (+24.3%) and vegetables (+62.7%). Animal products prices grew (+6.0%), due to higher price of milk (+25.0%). On the decrease were prices of cattle for slaughter (-0.2%), poultry (-0.9%), pigs for slaughter (-8.3%) and eggs (-17.5%).

Industrial producer prices increased by 1.8% (+2.3% in July). Prices rose the most in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’ (+22.6%), ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (+9.9%) and ‘mining and quarrying’ (+8.4%). Prices went down the most markedly in ‘transport equipment’ (-4.2%) and ‘food products, beverages and tobacco’ (-2.1%), of these the most ‘grain mill products, starches and starch products’ (-10.4%), on the other hand, prices rose in ‘dairy products’ (+10.0%).
Among the main industrial groupings, prices of ‘energy’ increased the most (+5.4%); the largest decrease was recorded for ‘non-durable consumer goods’ (-2.3%).

According to an estimate, construction work prices were down by 0.3% (-0.2% in July). Construction material input prices were up by 2.4% (+2.2% in July).

Market services prices in the business sphere were down by 1.0% (-1.2% in July). Decreasing were prices in advertising and market research services (-3.7%), real estate services (-1.6%) and telecommunications services (-3.0%). Higher prices were recorded in employment services (+9.6%). Market services prices excluding advertising services decreased by 0.7%.

Industrial producer prices in the EU – July 2010*

According to the Eurostat News Release, industrial producer prices in the EU27 increased by 0.2% in July (+0.3% in June), month-on-month. Among Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were recorded in Bulgaria (+2.3%), Cyprus (+1.8%), Denmark and the Netherlands (+0.9% both). Prices rose in Germany and Slovakia (+0.5% both). The largest decreases were observed in Greece (-1.2%) and Hungary (-0.6%).

EU27 producer prices rose by 4.4% in July (+3.5% in June), year-on-year. The largest increases were observed in Malta (+15.1%), Hungary (+9.9%) and Bulgaria (+9.0%). Prices in Germany increased by 3.6%. The only decrease was observed in Slovakia (-0.7%).

Except for the construction work price indices, the data are finalised. Construction work price indices are updated using the finished quarterly survey and the finalised data are released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
