Producer price indices - April 2016

The first m-o-m growth of industrial producer prices since May 2015

In April 2016 compared with the previous month, agricultural producer prices went down by 3.0%. Industrial producer prices and construction work prices were both higher by 0.1%. Prices of market services went up by 0.6%. In comparison to April 2015, agricultural producer prices were lower by 7.2% and industrial producer prices fell by 4.7%. Construction work prices grew by 1.2% and prices of market services increased by 0.2%.

 

Month-on-month comparison:

Agricultural producer prices decreased by 3.0%. Prices of cereals (-4.1%), milk (-3.4%), eggs (-2.4%), oil plants (-1.7%) and pigs for slaughter (-1.5%) went down. Prices of poultry went up by 2.9%.

Prices of industrial producers increased firstly since May 2015 by 0.1%. Prices were higher particularly in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’. Prices rose in ‘water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation services’ (+1.1%). Higher were prices in ‘furniture, other manufactured products’ and ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (+0.2% both). Prices went down in ‘mining and quarrying’ (-0.5%), ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (-0.4%) and ‘food products, beverages, tobacco’ (-0.3%).

According to an estimate, construction work prices grew by 0.1% and construction material input prices fell by 0.5%.

Market services prices in the business sphere rose by 0.6% due to the price increasing of ‘advertising and market research services’ (+6.3%). On the increase were prices of ‘land transport services and transport services via pipelines’, ‘publishing services’, ‘computer programming, consultancy and related services’ and ‘real estate services’ (+0.1% all). Market services prices excluding advertising services went up by 0.1%.

 

Year-on-year comparison:

Agricultural producer prices went down by 7.2% (-4.6% in March). After eight months of growth, prices of crop products went down by 3.9%. Lower were prices of cereals (-10.4%) and oil plants (-0.7%). Higher were prices of vegetables (+23.1%) and potatoes (+46.0%). Prices of animal products fell by 11.3% due to decreasing prices of milk (-18.5%), pigs for slaughter (-10.7%) and eggs (-4.8%). On the decrease were also prices of cattle for slaughter
 (-2.0%) and poultry (-1.2%).

Prices of industrial producers went down by 4.7% (-4.5% in March). Prices were lower primarily in ‘coke, refined petroleum products’. On the decrease were prices in ‘chemicals and chemical products’ (-9.1%), ‘mining and quarrying’ (-7.0%) and ‘basic metals, fabricated metal products’ (-6.0%). Prices went down in ‘electricity, gas, steam and air conditioning’ (-4.0%), thereof ‘electricity, transmission and distribution services’ (-6.2%). Prices were lower in ‘food products, beverages, tobacco’ (-3.1%). Prices rose more significantly in ‘water supply, sewerage, waste management and remediation services’ (+1.6%).

Among the main industrial groupings, prices of ‘energy’ (-10.3%) decreased the most, y-o-y.

According to an estimate, construction work prices rose by 1.2% (+1.3% in March after specification) and construction material input prices fell by 2.1% (-1.7% in March).

Prices of market services in the business sphere grew by 0.2% (in March stayed unchanged). Increasing were prices in ‘advertising and market research services’ (+1.4%), ‘computer programming, consultancy and related services’ (+1.7%), ‘architectural and engineering services’ (+2.1%) and ‘employment services’ (+5.3%). On the decrease were prices of ‘land transport services and transport services via pipelines’ (-0.7%) and ‘insurance, reinsurance and pension funding services, except compulsory social security’ (-4.4%). Market services prices excluding advertising services stayed unchanged (-0.1% in March). 

 

Industrial producer prices in the EU – March 2016*

According to the Eurostat News Releases, industrial producer prices went up in March by 0.4% (-0.6% in February) in EU28, month-on-month. Among the Member States for which data are available, the highest increases were observed in Greece (+1.8%), Estonia (+1.6%) and Belgium (+1.4%). Prices rose in Poland (+0.4%), Germany and Austria (+0.1% both) and remained stable in the Czech Republic. Prices went down in Lithuania and Slovakia (-0.7% both) and Cyprus (-1.6%).

Industrial producer prices decreased in March by 4.1% (-4.2% in February) in EU28, year-on-year. Prices fell in all Member States, the most in the Netherlands (-10.9%), Greece (-9.0%), Belgium and Lithuania (-6.3% both). Prices were lower in Slovakia (-6.2%), the Czech Republic (-4.5%), Austria (-4.1%), Germany (-3.0%) and Poland (-2.3%).

Except for the construction work price indices, the published data are finalised. Estimates of the construction work price indices are carrying out on the 9th calendar day of the following day. Construction work price indices are updated using the finished quarterly survey and the finalised data are released on the 45th calendar day of the following quarter.
