Population changes - 1st half of 2010

Population is increasing

In the first half-year of 2010, the population of the Czech Republic increased by 9.0 thousand to 10 515.8 thousand. Nearly two thirds of the growth resulting from natural change - the number of live births exceeded the number of deaths by 5.7 thousand. The international migration balance was positive at the level of 3.3 thousand. The number of live births was by 0.3 thousand lower that in the period January-June 2009. The number of deaths (by 2.4 thousand), abortions (by 1.2 thousand) and divorces (by 0.4 thousand) also decreased this year. The number of marriages was significantly lower (by 2.3 thousand).
According to the preliminary statistical balance the population of the Czech Republic on 30 June was 10 515 818. The total population increased by 9.0 thousand persons during the first six months of 2010. Almost from two thirds the population increase was due to positive trend of natural change, when the number of live births exceeded the number of deaths by 5 713. The international migration balance was also positive, at the level of 3 292, but markedly lower than in the 1 ^st half-year of 2009 (by 17.1 thousand).

From January to June 2010 a total of 58.2 thousand children were born alive in the Czech Republic, which was by 259 down on a year before. There were less children of married, divorced and widowed women, however the number of live births born to single women increased (by 0.9 thousand). A total of 23.2 thousand children were born outside marriage in the 1 ^st half-year of 2010 (40.0 percent), by 1.2 percentage point up than in the whole year 2009. From the first birth order children, more than half was born outside marriage - 51.2 percent. The most of children were delivered by woman born in 1979, or at the age of 30. In the comparison to the 1 ^st half-year of 2009 there were more children in the second or higher birth order, the number of first children was lower. The fertility is at a standstill, by preliminary estimate at the level of 1.49 children per woman.

There were 52.5 thousand of deaths in the 1 ^st half-year of 2010, which was 2.4 thousand less than in the same period of 2009. The number of children who died before reaching the age of 1 also decreased, the infant mortality rate was 2.7 per mille. More than half of deceased women and almost one third of deceased men were older than 80 years. The most frequent causes of death were diseases of the circulatory system (26.5 thousand), neoplasms (13.8 thousand) and diseases of the respiratory system (3.1 thousand).

In the 1 ^st half-year of 2010 the decline in the number of marriages further continued. In every month, there were fewer marriages than a year before. A total of 17.1 thousand of marriages were entered into, which was by 2.3 thousand down on a year before. The average age of groom was 35.1 years (31.1 for the first marriage) and the average age of bride was 32.0 years (28.2 years for single). In three-quarters, it was the 1 ^st marriage for them. The nuptiality went down mostly for people up to 35 years old.

In January to June a total of 15.0 thousand of divorces were registered, which was by 430 less than in the same period a year before. By 58 percent, they were related to the marriage with minors, which were 13.0 thousand. A fifth of divorces came before 5 years from the wedding.
In the 1 ^st half-year of 2010 the number of abortions (19.7 thousand) was by 1.2 thousand lower than a year before. There were fewer induced abortions (by 0.6 to 12.2 thousand) as well as spontaneous abortions (by 0.6 to 6.8 thousand). In the comparison with the whole previous year the share of the induced abortions slightly increased (to 61.9 percent). A total of 8.8 thousand married women and 8.4 thousand single women underwent the abortion, in the group of induced abortions there were more single than married women (5.7 against 4.8 thousand).

According to the data from the Central Population Register Record of the Ministry of Interior the net migration was 3.3 thousand in the 1 ^st half-year 2010. It was markedly lower than in the same period of 2009 (by 17.1 thousand). The number of immigrants was lower almost by half (by 10.9 thousand to 13.6 thousand), on the contrary the number of emigrants was 2.5times higher (10.3 thousand against 4.0 thousand a year before). The highest net migration was reached with the citizens of Ukraine (1.6 thousand) and Russia (1.5 thousand), followed by Vietnam and United States (both 0.8 thousand). Contrariwise, the significant decrease in the number of citizens from Slovak Republic (by 1.8 thousand), Poland (by 1.5 thousand) and Germany (by 0.7 thousand) was registered. The net international migration of the Czech citizens was balanced (1 092 people immigrated so as emigrated).

Since 1 ^st May 2004, in accordance with amendment No. 326/1999 Coll., the figures include citizens of the European Union with temporary stay on the territory of the Czech Republic, and citizens of other countries with long-term stay. The data contain also information on events (marriages, births and deaths) of permanent residents of the Czech Republic that occurred abroad.
