The population of the Czech Republic increased by 9.2 thousand to 10 521.6 thousand in the first half of this year. The number of inhabitants grew up thanks to positive balance of natural change (1.3 thousand) and international migration (7.9 thousand). The number of immigrants increased significantly in year-on-year comparison (by 64%), the number of marriages (by 3%) and the number of live births (by 1%) increased slightly. The number of deaths dropped radically (by 9%), the number of emigrants (by 2%), divorces and abortions (by 1%) dropped a little.

According to the preliminary statistical balance the population of the Czech Republic increased by 9.2 thousand to 10 521.6 thousand from 1 January to 30 June 2014 while it decreased by 3.7 thousand during the year 2013. Population growth was mainly caused by positive balance of net migration (7.9 thousand). The number of live births exceeded the number of deaths by 1.3 thousand.

During the first half of 2014 according to the preliminary data there were a total of 53.1 thousand live births; it was by 0.7 thousand more than in the same period in the previous year. Children born to unmarried mothers constituted all year-on-year growth (+1.2 thousand), children born to married, divorced and widowed women decreased. The share of live births outside marriage was 46.2%, whereas in the year 2013 it was 45.0%. The first born children were born most often to women at age 29, the second born children at age 32 and children of higher order at age 35.

In the first half of 2014 the number of deaths was by 5.3 thousand lower than in the same period a year earlier (2013), a total of deaths was 51.8 thousand. The significant decrease was caused by lower number of deaths especially in the first two months of the year. The average age of deaths increased by two tenth to 75.3 years (71.8 for men and 78.9 for women) in comparison with year 2013. The number of deaths of children aged less than one year was 135 (2.5 out of 1,000 live births).

A total of 17.9 thousand couples entered into marriages during the first half of 2014, it was by 527 more than a year before during January-June period. The most numerous were grooms at the age of 29 and brides at the age of 26.

The number of divorces was in a total 13.6 thousand during the first half of 2014; it was by 115 lower in the year-on-year comparison. The highest number of divorced marriages was noticed at 6 years after marriage, on average the marriages lasted 14.8 years. A total of 7.6 thousand divorces (56 %) represented families with minors which were 11.6 thousand altogether.

A total of 18.8 thousand abortions were registered in the first two quarters of 2014, by 279 fewer than a year before. Six out of the ten abortions belonged to the group of induced abortions (11.4 thousand). A total of 6.7 thousand spontaneous abortions were registered and it was 36.0 % of the total number of abortions. Almost one-half of abortions (9.2 thousand) constituted women with the marital status “single”, these women also constituted majority group in the case of induced abortions.

Thanks to the significantly higher number of immigrants the balance of net migration was according to the preliminary data positive, in a total it was 7.9 thousand in the period January-June 2014. In the comparison with the same period in the previous year, in the first half of 2014 there were 22.9 thousand of immigrants, by 8.9 thousand more than a year before, whereas the number of emigrants increased slightly (by 0.2 thousand) to 14.9 thousand. In comparison with year 2013, immigrants exceeded again emigrants (in the year 2013 it was oppositely). Citizens of Ukraine dominated in both directions, besides Ukrainians citizens of Slovakia and Russia were the most frequent immigrants, citizens of the Czech Republic and Vietnam belonged to the most frequent emigrants. The highest migration balance was registered with citizens of Slovakia (2.7 thousand), Russia (1.6 thousand), Germany (0.9 thousand) and Ukraine (0.4 thousand) in the first half of the 2014. The negative balance of net migration was greatest for Czech citizens (-0.4 thousands).
