Decreased meat production, increased producer prices of animals for slaughter

In Q4 2012 meat production amounted to 118 905 tonnes. It means a decrease by 3.0% year-on-year, of which by 9.0% in beef and by 5.9% in pigmeat, whereas poultry meat production increased by 4.9%. Milk delivery went down by 0.9% to 564 668 thousand litres.
The year 2012 was characterised by a decline in beef and pigmeat production ( 8.9% and 8.8%, respectively), by increased poultry meat production (+2.7%), milk delivery (+3.4%), and by a growth in agricultural producer prices of animals for slaughter for cattle (+10.0%), pigs (+17.0%), and poultry (+4.4%). Milk prices, on the contrary, decreased ( 5.9%).

Slaughtering and meat production
In Q4 2012 the number of slaughtered cattle was 59 235 heads; it decreased by 8.2%, y-o-y. The decline was recorded in all categories, of which in the most important ones - bulls and cows - it accounted 12.2% and 4.4%, respectively. The total beef and veal production amounted to 16 989 tonnes. It declined by 9.0%, y-o-y, and increased by 9.0% in comparison with Q3 2012.
The number of slaughtered pigs went down to 700 844 heads, i.e. by 6.1%, y-o-y. The pigmeat production decreased to 61 719 tonnes (by 5.9%). Compared with Q3 2012 it increased by 6.1%.
The poultry meat production reached 40 125 tonnes and was by 4.9% higher than in the same period of the previous year.

Agricultural producer prices of cattle, pigs and chicken for slaughter
In Q4 2012 agricultural producer prices of cattle for slaughter increased y-o-y for all categories: by 13.9% for cows, by 11.7% for heifers, by 10.3% for bulls, and by 3.5% for calves. The average price of bulls for slaughter in S, E and U quality classes was CZK 47.40 per kg of live weight or CZK 86.05 per kg of carcass weight.
Agricultural producer prices of pigs for slaughter grew as well, namely by 19.0%, y-o-y. Producers sold pigs for slaughter in S, E and U quality classes for CZK 35.88 per kg of live weight or for CZK 46.04 per kg of carcass weight on average.
Agricultural producer prices of chicken for slaughter increased by 8.1%, y-o-y. The average price of chicken for slaughter in first-quality class was CZK 24.33 per kg of live weight.

Milk collection and agricultural producer prices of milk
In Q4 2012 dairies collected 564 668 thousand litres of milk from domestic producers, i.e. by 0.9% less than in the same period of 2011.
Agricultural producer prices of milk decreased by 10.1%. Producers sold milk of Q-quality class for CZK 7.54 per litre on average.

2012 – Production, agricultural producer prices, and external trade

In 2012 the meat production amounted to 458 329 tonnes, which was by 5.3% less than in 2011. This amount included 65 244 tonnes of beef, 469 tonnes of veal, 239 753 tonnes of pigmeat, 165 tonnes of sheep meat (of which 119 tonnes of lamb), 5 tonnes of goat meat, 80 tonnes of horse meat, and 152 613 tonnes of poultry meat.

Cattle and beef
The beef and veal production reached 65 713 tonnes (−8.9%) in 2012. Declines by 14.7% and by 3.4% were recorded for bulls and cows, respectively.
Agricultural producer prices of cattle for slaughter went up in all categories: cows (+13.3%), heifers (+10.6%), bulls (+8.3%), and calves (+3.4%). Farmers sold bulls for slaughter in S, E, and U quality classes for CZK 46.42 per kg of live weight or CZK 84.22 per kg of carcass weight on average (minimum CZK 81.35 per kg in January, maximum CZK 86.11 per kg in October).
According to provisional results, external trade 1) in live cattle showed a positive balance (62 009 tonnes) in the period from December 2011 to November 2012. Imports amounted merely to 516 tonnes (−17.0%), whereas exports reached 62 525 tonnes (+20.1%). The largest part of increased exports represented animals for slaughter (+41.1%); their number was by 20 646 heads higher than in the previous year. The main trade partner for exported live cattle was Austria.
Imports 1) of beef exceeded exports 1) by 10 648 tonnes. Imports went down to 18 685 tonnes (−16.9%), while exports remained on the level of the previous year and amounted to 8 037 tonnes (−0.5%). The trade in beef with Germany and Austria went in both directions; Poland and Slovakia prevailed in imports and exports, respectively.

Pigs and pigmeat
The pigmeat production decreased to 239 753 tonnes (−8.8%) in 2012.
Agricultural producer prices of pigs for slaughter grew by 17.0%. The producers sold pigs for slaughter in S, E and U quality classes for CZK 33.26 per kg of live weight or CZK 42.78 per kg of carcass weight on average (minimum CZK 39.83 per kg in February, maximum CZK 46.40 per kg in October).
A deficit of external trade 1) in live pigs in the period from December 2011 to November 2012 was 9 035 tonnes. Imports and exports of live pigs amounted to 29 883 tonnes (+30.7%) and 20 848 tonnes (−11.3%), respectively. Young pigs up to 50 kg (mainly piglets with average weight 25.6 kg) as well as pigs above 50 kg (predominantly pigs for slaughter with average weight 106.2 kg) contributed to increased imports. Imports accounted for 522.8 thousand piglets (+6.9%) and 16 346 tonnes of pigs for slaughter (+63.0%). Exports of fattened pigs decreased by 11.2% (to 19 423 tonnes), while exports of piglets grew three times (to 33.6 thousand heads). Piglets were imported from Denmark, Germany, and the Netherlands; pigs for slaughter were exported to Hungary and Slovakia.
The negative balance of external trade 1) in pigmeat (−187 589 tonnes) comprised 225 444 tonnes (+5.1%) of imported and 37 856 tonnes (−4.3%) of exported pigmeat. Germany and Slovakia held outstanding positions in pigmeat exports and imports, respectively.

Poultry and poultry meat
The poultry meat production increased to 152 613 tonnes (+2.7%) in 2012.
Agricultural producer prices of chicken for slaughter increased by 4.4%. The average price of chicken for slaughter in the first-quality class was CZK 23.08 per kg of live weight (minimum CZK 22.35 per kg in June, maximum CZK 24.66 per kg in December).
External trade 1) with live poultry in the period from December 2011 to November 2012 reached a positive balance of 32 489 tonnes, of which imports amounted to 5 366 tonnes (−1.0%) and exports to 37 854 tonnes (−8.8%). A significant part of trade in live poultry was represented by individuals up to 185 g, i.e. one-day-old chicks. In total 18 267 thousand chicken (−7.1%) were imported and 78 567 thousand chicken (−0.4%) were exported in this category. Imports of poultry for slaughter reached 3 873 tonnes (−13.9%) and its exports 32 478 tonnes (−14.4%). Slovakia was involved in both directions of the trade with live poultry. Furthermore, one-day-old chicks were imported from Germany and exported to Romania, Ukraine and Poland; poultry for slaughter was exported also to Germany and Poland.
External trade 1) in poultry meat showed a negative balance (−70 692 tonnes); imports reached 100 359 tonnes (+9.3%), and exports 29 667 tonnes (+16.8%). Poultry meat was imported from Poland and also from Brazil, and exported mainly to Slovakia.

Milk and milk products
In 2012 dairies collected 2 381.8 million litres of milk (+3.4%).
Agricultural producer prices of milk decreased by 5.9%. The average price of milk for the first-quality class was CZK 7.79 per litre (minimum CZK 7.26 per litre in September, maximum CZK 8.46 per litre in January).
In external trade 1) in milk and milk products, exports surpassed imports by 663 846 tonnes. Imports grew to 269 142 tonnes (+8.8%), and exports to 902 987 tonnes (+9.4%). Imports increased in all categories of milk and milk products: milk and cream (+15.6%), butter (+9.2%), cheese and curd (+5.9%), and acidified milk products (+0.5%). Exports of milk and cream increased (+12.6%) as well as of cheese and curd (+17.3%), while exports of acidified milk products and of butter decreased (−13.3% and −14.3 %, respectively). The most important partners in trade in milk and milk products were Germany and Slovakia, together with Poland in imports.
