Administrative and territorial technical breakdown of Prague

Administrative and territorial technical breakdown of Prague

According to Act No. 131/2000 Coll., of 13 April 2000, on the Capital City of Prague, in wording of later regulations, Prague is the capital of the Czech Republic, a region and a municipality at the same time. It is broken down into city sections, positions and competence of which are stipulated by the above-mentioned Act, a special law, and the Statute approved by the Council of Representatives of the Capital City of Prague.

City sections were established based on Act 418/90 of Czech National Council, of 9 October 1990, on the Capital City of Prague, with effect from 24 November 1990. At that time, 56 self-governing city sections were created. In 1992, from Praha 7 city section an independent city section called Praha – Troja was separated. The Statute, which was passed by Decree No. 55/2000 Coll., splits the city now into 57 city sections administered by their councils, boards and offices. The Statute delegated some competences to 22 city sections for them to carry out the delegated competences as administrative districts for the remaining city sections, too (see the previous chapter for the splitting of the 57 city sections into 22 administrative districts).

In addition to the administrative arrangement, Act No. 131/2000 Coll., Article 11, defined the territory in technical terms as follows: the territory of the Capital City of Prague comprises cadastral areas as annexed to this Act”. There are 112 cadastral areas listed in the nomenclature of cadastral areas on page 225.

Given the fact that this territorial technical breakdown is not identical to the territorial administrative one, some of the cadastral areas are divided into two or more parts. These units are included in two nomenclatures with own codes, namely:

  • the nomenclature of municipal sections-part (MS-part), and
  • the nomenclature of territorial technical units (TTU)

Since the split into city sections - CS or cadastral areas – CA (MS-part and TTU) is too rough for a in-depth statistical description, some statistical data are measured for smaller territorial units - basic settlement units, which are referred to as “town planning districts” where towns are concerned.

This chapter shows the basic administrative and territorial technical breakdowns of Prague in the following order: 57city sections fall under 22 administrative districts with territorial technical units (cadastral areas or there parts where the cadastral area is split by the border of a city section) within the individual city sections.
