Czechia knows names of new Members of the European Parliament

Voters in the Czech Republic, after five years, decided about a new play of forces in the European Parliament. Based on the election results, 21 seats of Members of the European Parliament will be distributed among 7 political entities: ANO, ODS, STAN +TOP 09, Piráti, SPD, KDU-ČSL and KSČM.
The turnout was 28.72%.

ANO is the winner of the elections with 21.18% and 6 seats. It is followed by Občanská demokratická strana (14.54%, 4 seats), Česká pirátská strana (13.95%, 3 seats), Starostové (STAN) s regionálními partnery a TOP 09 (11.65%, 3 seats), Svoboda a přímá demokracie – Tomio Okamura (SPD) (9.14%, 2 seats), Křesťanská a demokratická unie – Československá strana lidová (7.24%, 2 seats) and Komunistická strana Čech a Moravy (6.94%, 1 seat).

“The Czech Republic will be represented by 14 men and 7 women in the European Parliament. The average age of elected Members of the European Parliament (MEPs) is 46 years. The oldest MEP is 66 years old and the youngest is 26,” Eva Krumpová, First Vice President of the Czech Statistical Office, adds.

39 political entities were registered for the elections. 841 candidates were standing in the elections for 21 seats of MEPs; 23.9% of them were women. The average age of the candidates was 47.6 years; it is almost a year more than five years ago. There were 9 youngest candidates who were 21 years old, while the oldest candidate was 82 years old during the elections.

“28.72% voters came to polling stations, i.e. more than in the year 2014, when the turnout reached 18.2%. The highest turnout was in the municipality of Čilá, where 90.00% voters came to polling stations; the lowest turnout was in the municipality of Vřesová, where 8.63% came to polling stations,” Marek Rojíček, President of the Czech Statistical Office, summarises data about the turnout.

The last ward was processed on Saturday at 8.14 p.m. However, the Czech Statistical Office was allowed to release the result on Sunday after 11 p.m. at the earliest, when polling stations in the last country of the European Union closed. On Monday, the State Electoral Committee will discuss the results of voting and after their approval they will be published in the Collection of Laws.
