1 Data sources
1.1 Capacity of collective accommodation establishments (files 1.x)
Data on the capacity of accommodation establishments were obtained from the annual statistical survey in collective accommodation establishments serving tourism to 2007. The survey was based on the use of the Register of accommodation establishments; results are then retrospectively used for its actualisation. The survey covered all collective establishments on the basis of area sampling and reported state to 31 December or to the last day they offered accommodation in the given year. Until 2002 (including) the units reported the state to 31 December. Published data is the total of processed data from submitted reports and data for those accommodation establishments that failed to report. In these cases, information on capacity was taken from the register of accommodation establishments (RUBT), which is continually updated using the results of the survey and administrative sources available. Since 2008 the sources of information are questionnaires on Guests at collective accommodation establishments (see 1.2).
1.2 Guests at collective accommodation establishments (files 2.x)
Data on guests at collective tourist accommodation establishments are based on the regular sample survey organized by the CZSO. Until 2002 (including) the collective accommodation establishments were included in the survey on the basis of a random 30% selection from the Register of accommodation establishments. A monthly obligation to report was set for the respondents and results were published quarterly. Since 2003 the survey covers all collective establishments on the basis of area sampling. The survey is divided into a monthly survey, which covers selected units and quarterly survey covering the rest of the collective accommodation establishments. Data on guests is the total of processed data from submitted reports and imputed data of accommodation establishments that failed to report.
1.3 Other data on collective accommodation establishments (files 3.x)
1.3.1 Conferences at collective accommodation establishments (files 3.1.x)
The number of conferences and the number of participants is obtained from the questionnaire on guests at collective tourist accommodation establishments (CR 1-12 and CR 2-04). It is the total of processed data from submitted reports. The number of establishments includes all units that reported at least one conference with 50 participants and more during surveyed period.
1.4 Domestic and outbound tourism (files 4.x)
The source for the data on domestic and outbound tourism of residents of the Czech Republic is the tourism sample survey (TSS). The survey is carried out monthly in randomly sampled households. Respondents are asked about trips, which they made in the reference period. The survey results are published quarterly.
All persons usually residing in private households are the subjects of the survey. The survey does not apply to persons residing for a long term in collective accomodation establishments. The respondents are questioned about their holiday trips (to spend leisure time, for recreation, improvement of health, visiting of the relatives and friends) and business trips. Only trips outside the respondent’s usual environment are included in tourism (trips outside the respondent’s permanent or temporary residence, workplace, school and the like), the length of which has not exceeded 12 months.
Population of districts and regions is taken into consideration when sampling the dwellings. The Register of Census Districts and Buildings is the sampling frame. The sampling has two levels: a census district is the first-level sampling unit; on the second level, a simple random sampling of dwellings in census districts is made. A trained interviewer, who is an employee of the CZSO, then visits selected dwellings. Since 2009, data on travelling habits have been surveyed among all household members. Before (until 2008 and including it), interviewers asked only one randomly selected member of a household from among those household members aged 15+.
Data of the sample survey are grossed up by weight coefficients to the entire population. The weighting is done by territory, sex and age group. Data on population are taken from preliminary results of the population statistics on the population in the beginning of the relevant year; this estimation si further specified by a prediction of natural increase/decrease and migration balance for the relevant quarters of the year.

5 Confidentiality protection
Due to individual data protection, some of the tables do not contain all data (letters “i.d.“ instead), or data are not in a more detailed breakdown. Flag i.d.* represents data, which cannot be published due to individual data protection in other category.
6 International comparability
Within the EU for tourism statistics there is an effective Directive 95/57/EC (Council Directive) for the collection of statistical information in tourism. On the basis of this Directive the EU member states are obligated to give data on capacity and guests in collective accommodation establishments and on domestic and outbound tourism. Indicators correspond with the international methodology and are internationally comparable.
